Man business must be good in my parts. I had three different dealers onboard to look at a purchase and install. One gave me a quote without ever coming out. Over 5k for a Jotul 400 . Rear vent and up 8' to the roof , single story. Two others came out and said easy install. Never even heard back from them with a price. Im not chasing a dealer to get a stove installed. I have all summer to look for one now.

Makes it easy to rule them out. Must be a sign to be patient.

I looked for months before I found a dealer that was willing to sell and install or (believe this or not) help me do the installation. You would think that some of these dealers had so much busness they couldn"t handle it all. I know better. We live in a town of 18000 and a banker told me the other day that there were 400 fore-closures under way in our town alone.

Have run into this with just about all the trades. Drywall, concrete, gutters, paving, landscaping, carpentery, siding, etc. I do most work myself but sometimes it's out of the scope of my know how or tooling.
Now that i think of it, even firewood. The last guy that delivered actually told me to $%#% off when I wanted more wood delivered.

this is a very telling situation: if these dealers are not all over you during the sales cycle, can you imagine what they will be like if/when the stove needs service? Take your time and find someone who wants your business.

I have a used Napoleon 1101 insert for sale if that helps? Well you asked, - lol.

I hear ya though. It's like they want to make up all the lost revenue due to the economy in one sale.

+1. I couldn't have said it better myself!!

Are you settled on that particular brand as your only stove, or would you be willing to look outside of Jotul?

I've have found any kind of dealer..cars, matresses, stoves..are mostly scumbags who could care less about anything other than selling you something quick.

Sorry good dealers :)...

It's a shame because it makes the good dealers jobs harder

I don't shop anywhere without googling there reviews,

5k for the stove and insert? Heck, I paid 4500 and I had 34 feet of SS liner installed.......I would keep looking.

Woodstock wants to sell you a freaking stove! ~ 30% off through April 13. :cheese: Sounds like the Keystone might be a nice fit for you. . .Castine-sized, rear or top vent. DIY the chimney for cheap, or find a chimney sweep or carpenter(if you need a hole through the roof) who wants the work.

That dealer is a douchebag IMO but I will say what I see around here is the deals are not what they were just because stores are not stocking like they used too. Inventories are slim and ordering what you need when you need it is the trend. When I bought my first stove 4 years ago the dealer took me to the storage down the street to see if he had any "in stock"; I asked him about it when I was looking for floor panels and he said he no longer has the storage unit, he don't have much in stock anymore. For some reason he was selling pellets like crazy though. The 1/2 hour I was there four people came in to buy a bag a pellets.

Good luck on the search though.

This applies across the board. I am building my own house and have run into the same problem when getting quotes from stovepipe to custom glass and everything in-between. I just spent $2K on custom gable glass, and one local company never even called me back for a quote even after I dropped the spec's off in person and followed up with a phone call! Everybody whines about the economy, but what I see and deal with are a large majority of take it or leave it businesses with a crap attitude. Sooooo, if you want it done and done right, bone up(google your phalanges off), and do it yourself. That is what I have done, and in the end you will have actually done/learned something you can be proud of.

It's all about the quick buck.

Friend of mine bought a enclosed trailer last year to store his motorcycles in. So this year he goes back to get all the wheel chucks, jack stands, and rigging he needs to make it actually capable of hauling a couple of bikes.

This great big place with over a 100 trailers in the yard tries to sell him another $700 dollars of hardware. But, will they install it? .............nooooooooooo they point him down the road to some guy trying to make a buck in his backyard. They just want to sell the parts, just like the box stores.

I'd never buy an expensive product that way.. Service is so much more important than the few percent you might save in a purchase.

That's my thinking.

PS, The end of the story is I took him to my dealer and they gave him a better price on better parts and is going to charge him a fair labor fee to expertly install and customize it all for him. With a smile.
