So I pulled all the bricks, took off the door and was looking it over today when I kinda ran into a quandary of sorts. How the bloody heck does the pedestal come off???? I know I've had a long day and am dead beat tired but I think they hosed up bad.

There's (2) carriage bolts on each side of the unit at the top of the pedestal/bottom of the stove. Carriage bolts, i.e. no hex head. The head is faced out. The ash pan tray is completely welded up, i.e. no exposed nuts to turn. They appear to be inside of the pedestal/ash pan holder. Could this be the reason for the cheap price? Screwed up manufacturing?

Help me here guys. Like I said, it's a been a long day and I could be over looking something here but I don't think I am. Pics coming if required. I do have the unit laying on it's back, not that that really matters.

told ya it's been a long day - lol. I guess the instructions telling you to lay it down on it's back threw me for a loop. Damn near impossible to get at them laying on it's back. Still not sure how you going to get a socket on there and have enough clearance on the front ones to actually do anything.

Hmmm...... maybe the pedestal stays on. I need the lower ht. anyway. Either that or the 9" legs become 5" inch legs. We'll see how it goes getting after those front 2 bolts.

Thanks for the heads up!

been a long day here too. no worries.

Looking forward to seeing what you think of the beast.

I believe the legs and the pedestal make the unit the same height. I am sure someone can confirm this.

;-)

I took my pedestal off friday night. Real pain. You can move a socket or open wrench back in there, but only in very small increments. I myself also hate carriage bolts. The legs were a pain to put on also, so I borrowed a buddies impact wrench and made it a lot easier. The whole swap turned into more of a job than I thought it would be, but I like the look of the legs much more than the pedestal.

yeah with regular hand tools it could be kind of a pain. Air ratchet for myself and I was done in 10 mins. My custom 5"ish legs are on. She's all ready to go now so whose coming over to help me get this in the living room - lol???

What size is the nut so I can make sure I have - or pick up - a ratcheting box end? Mine is scheduled to arrive tomorrow afternoon but will not be installed until later this spring. I am making some changes to my hearth first.

While a ratcheting wrench may be handy, I wouldn't buy one if it's something you won't have another use for. The job most definitely can be done w/out it, but if there is a ratcheting one in the tool box already, I'd grab it.

My stove is almost cold so I just grabbed a standard box end 9/16in wrench and stuck in in there to try and had a heck of a lot more room getting to them nuts than I have had when getting to similar ones on vehicles.

The 9/16 seemed solid for it, the 14mm also fit, but was very snug on the head. Since the book lists it as a 3/8 bolt, I'd assume it's a standard and not metric nut, but who knows. Again, if you have tools already, I personally won't go out of your way for anything special. If you turn wrenches w/ any regularity, it shouldn't be an issue.

Yeah they are new, not old rusty, bolts and nuts. Get a half turn with a box or open end wrench and stick in a finger and spin the nuts off.

it is a 9/16th , as for the ratcheting wrenches, i flat love em, used them all the time before i even started using on stoves.

Figured you'd keep it in the US!

I keep threatening to buy a good set of them wrenches. One of these days after a bunch more wasted time and several more busted knuckles, I'll do it.

Thanks
