I just took this BUCK model 80 (catalytic)? out of my dad's old place. He wanted me to sell it for him.

It needs a front glass which I priced from the BUCK site itself for $100.

Comes with the top of the chimney stack and a couple of small sections of stove pipe.

Retail on this thing is $2400!!! Apparently it's a nice stove. It's about 5 yrs. old.

What's this thing worth in 'as is' condition? Anybody close to Cincinnati who wants it cheap?

5 years old? Are those is dog years? One year = 7 normal years, right?

Absolutely...we are talking about dogs on this forum, right?

Actually, that's not correct. The 7:1 dog to human years is a myth. New science has proven that some time ago. http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2011/01/one-dog-year-isnt-equal-to-seven-human-years/

If you're gonna be a smartass, get your facts right. :)

And how much did you say it's worth in your best professional opinion...? That was the question I believe.

$100?

I've bought 5 stoves used, and I would pass that one up no matter the price. It looks abused, it has rust and damaged, and it looks as if it's been exposed to the elements.

If I saw a craigslist ad stating it was only 5 years old I would figure the owner isn't being honest to a certain degree. It doesn't matter what the stove is going for new, because that stove is pretty far from being new and no longer a 'nice stove.'

If this was my stove, I'd inspect it, determine the damage, and if it was worth it, I would clean it up and replace any parts that might be needed. You'll make more money off of it that way. Unless it turns out it is much older than 5 years (which I suspect is the case).

My father bought the stove in '07. It has never been exposed to the elements except for the 20min. drive from his former residence (which is now my sisters residence) to my residence today. There was slight drizzle during the drive. The stove was not used this winter season. My sister decided to go back to oil furnace/heat.

I'm not trying to make money on it. Any money goes to my dad since he's retired and lives in a retirement community/apt. complex now and is on fixed income.

I'm not going to put any money in it either. Or try to dress it up. It is what it is. If I were concerned about getting the most money out of it, I would surely try to clean it up.

Even if somebody was to use this in a garage or shop type application, I would think it would be worth a few hundred. I'm getting that information just from local listings for wood burning stoves.

I'll list it locally as is, and let people make offers on it. Trust me, I don't want to mess with it. I almost offered dad money for it just so I didn't have to move the damn thing.

I disagree. Just because other stoves are listed for a few hundred does not mean they are selling for that price. If you follow those listings they will remain up for month. Most drop off due to the fact the owner did not re-list the stove. The last five years I have searched online to the point that it is nearly a hobby.

I bought a recent model catalytic Defiant in perfect condition for $400 last month. I bought a Catalytic Encore in fantastic condition for $350 last July. I bought a Hearthstone Heritage in Perfect condition for $1,000 in February of 2010. I bought a Vigilant in great condition for $400.

None of these needed parts. All of which were in extremely good condition. Good luck to you on trying to sell that stove for a few hundred, but that is going to be a tough sell.

Not trying to sell it for a few hundred. I said it seems it would be worth $200 to somebody.
I'm listing it as a 'make offer'.

Damn, what's wrong with you guys? Girl troubles? No lovin' in awhile?

You asked "What’s it worth"

I gave you thoughts as to how much and a detailed breakdown with reasoning behind my thoughts. I thought that's what you were looking for.

If you see any sweet deals in New England please let me know.

What are you looking for? What is your price range? How far are you willing to travel?

As is, maybe $450 if the cat is still good. But $350 would move it quicker. $200 is a great deal. Spend a day fixing it up and replacing the glass and I would say about $1200 if the cat is still alive and $1K if not.

Now that makes great sense. I would definitely take the time to replace the glass and clean it up properly if it could possibly pull those type of numbers.
I didn't realize it had potential value when until I got it home and researched what the stove really was.

Like I said, my elderly father used it for less than 5 yrs...single, divorced, elderly guy...how much abuse could have been given to it?

Stay tuned for this one....I'll post up the sales receipt when I sell it for $900.

Thanks for the more sensible opinion thus far.

A lot. Seriously.

I bought a used woodstove that was 5 years old. The cat was completely clogged and it had creosote drip marks under the side door and along the back. I ended up taking the top end completely apart to clean and regasket.

I'm kind of surprised at that.

The stove looks like it has the potential to clean up nicely. A 5 yr old, 2.6 cu ft, stout steel cat stove for about $1k? Not a bad deal if that is what you are after. Discount for off peak pricing and it is still worth at least $800 in good condition.

I have to say when I first saw the pics of this stove I thought that this stove was worth very little . . . the rust, the broken glass, etc. I figured the stove had to be much older than five years.

I think this is a time when taking some time to clean up the rust, repaint the entire stove and fix the glass on a stove this new (if it is truly only five years old) would be well worth the time and effort . . . as it stands now most folks would look at this and see a major project and think this is a very old stove and not worth much.

If I lived close by and saw that for sale I'd buy it in a snap. It doesn't look in that bad shape. There is an afternoon's worth of work to fix it up. I'd fix it up in the summer and sell in fall.
