I finally got my summit installed and was putting the firebricks in and noticed in the top left and right corners, running to the back of the stove, there is a cottonish looking roll of stuff, does that stay or go?

Stays. It is ceramic insulation that maintains the temperature for secondary burn. It should be enclosed in the stainless steel "floating baffle" at the top of the stove. Some probably sticks out a little.
Toss it and you will getting out your checkbook to replace it.

okay, another potentially stupid question, looking at page 15 for firebricks its stating i should have
(19) full sized bricks 9 x 4.5
(2) 9 x 3.5
(1) 7.25 x 4.5
what I have is
(17) 9 x 4.5
(2) 9 x 3.5
(2) 9 x (2.5 on top 4.5 on the botton) -its slanted
(1) 4.5 x 4.5
(1) 4.5 x 1.5
everything looks good on the bottom (9 full sized and 1 7.25 x 4.5)
looks good on the sides (8 full sized)
now for the back I am left with the (2) 9 x 3.5, the two slanted full size guys, and the two small ones, am I missing something obvious here?

Looks like you got too many bricks. The diagram is pretty clear on which goes where for the one with the ash pan and non ash pan models.
It looks to me the instruction only describe 3 types of bricks

Yeppers , The "cotton" looking baffle stays. Your secondary burn chamber at the top is a "floating" fire box and sits on the side rails and hooks to the air inlet tube in the back , make sure you have a gasket where the secondary burn chamber meets the back wall air tube inlet and the gasket is always in good shape. The cotton looking baffles go to the sides of the the burn chamber to fill the gap and it lets the burn chamber moves as the stoves heats and contracts.Smitty said:

I couldnt figure out what you were talking about and i looked back through some threads. I think i might of mentioned the back air tube is Stainless steel. its is not. The back tube and the back rail are are standard steel. The side rails , the top secondary burn chamber , the top plate above the secondary burn chamber and the front air inlet are all stainless steel. The back tube and rail are mounted and are part of the body of the stove.minesmoria said:

Awesome , mystery solved.I noticed your angle cut bricks still on the floor.........I'm sure you took out the full bricks on the bottom and noticed the angle cut brick go to the back bottom on the right and left ? Hey i remember when my stove was that clean. Do me a favor there Smitty if you would. Take a picture & post of your Summit showing the steel top of the stove to show how thick that monster top is. Good grief that things a monster. And now your gonna tell me that instead of splits, you've discovered that the PE Summit heats the house on just a candle.
I give up! I'm goin down to Heat Revival to see if they can hook me up with a PE Summit insert. With the wood I got in my yard I'll heat the house for the next 1000 years.

Nope, not a nut case, A Summit Junkie. I got it bad too, but I'm not jonesin' cause mine is currently lit and heating the house. Has been all day. :cheese:
If my fireplace was one inch wider I would probably have one of these Summit inserts on the way.

I don't exactly know what the guy's game is. PE does not list him as a dealer and his place isn't in the Hereford, TX phone book that I can find. But $2,195 freight paid and no local sales tax would be tempting. I would have to keep it quiet because my uncle is a hearth dealer in that same town.
Of course I will probably buy a Vogelzang just to drive the Forum nuts.

Thats a good price there BB . $2195. WITH gold door and FREE shipping. The Chimney sweep on line prices are real good and they are $2275.00 + $30.00 EPA tax + $$365.00 shipping to your door. ( $2690.oo ) That Ebay seller has been around for a wile selling stoves. (Ebay Member since: Jan-23-99) Saving $495.00 is $495.00 and thats a lot of cha-ching. ALSO that would mean you would only need to have 3 splits of wood for the whole YEAR to heat your house ! ;-)BrotherBart said:

I know you were considering a Summit, but sounds like you now don't think it will fit? I know mine was about an inch too wide also, or rather, the fireplace opening was about an inch too narrow, but just right at the very front where the brick facing was un-even. My installer chipped the brick back a bit to make it fit, and I knew the surround would cover it up and figured I had no plans to go back to a plain open fireplace anyways.
As far as the e-bay guy goes, he could be from anywhere and just listing Hereford as a location. Sounds like a good deal, and judging from the number of units and the door choices, he has to be a dealer, or connected to a dealer someplace. Maybe masking who he is so as not to draw the wrath of other PE dealers or the factory. I know they make a big thing about the fact that they don't sell factory direct, or condone their dealers selling over the internet.
