Feeling the Heat

I have an older splitter. It is a Mighty Murc. It had a Fram PH36A when I bought it. I did an oil and filter change. I replaced with a Wix 51261 according to local parts store. Now it leaks and I can't get to stop it. Any thoughts? I have cleaned mating surface and oiled the seal.

You have likely already done this, but just in case you haven't, pull the filter and make sure the seal isn't torn (even slightly).

Check the sealing surfaces for scratches and make sure the seal actually contacts the mount before the threaded stem bottoms out. Check the diameter of the seal too. It should be similar to the old filter regardless of differences in can diameter.

Check the top of the filter inlet, Make sure one Wix is not raised slightly that may prevent it from sealing. Also check the threads make sure it feels right going on, not tight but not sloppy either (one may be a metric thread). You did make sure the gasket is the same didn't you?

Thanks for the ideas. I will hopefully get to take another look at it tomorrow. I will let you know what I find.

Thanks,
Dan

Also check the mating surface to make sure the o-ring came off with the old filter. Sometimes if a spin filter is tightened too much when installed, it will stick to the housing when taking it off.
Don't ask how I know.... :)

+1! This happens more often than you think, I've seen it happen to cars and trucks many times.

My 25c is......check with another parts store to make sure the "qualified" guys gave you the correct filter replacement.
If you have the kind of quality staff we encounter around here...it might surprise you....

I rechecked the cross over #, that IS the filter that Wix shows, but I have seen mistakes on the manufacturer's end.
