Feeling the Heat

Apologize if this has already been discussed, but with temps here in sunny Central Massachusetts hitting the mid-70s yesterday, it seems wood burning season will soon be over [if it's not already].

My finally tally is just under 2.5 cords. That's compared to the 4-5 I burned last year in our first year in the house. That means I'm have about 7 cords stockpiled around the yard for next year. Now I've just got to build a woodshed to hold some of it.

Well It's warm now, but I would be willing to bet we could have quite a bit of cold weather still to come. I could easily burn a face cord (Yes, we use the F word here in NY), but I have only used 3 cords so far, compared to the normal 4.

Similar circumstances here. I use a wood fired add-on with my oil furnace and have only turned the furnace on a couple of times in the past two weeks just to hear the hot water tank.

GIven the record breaking warm weather, I'm sure that oil prices will be plummeting soon! yeah, right... :-(

We've burned around 2 cord so far but will burn more. The heating season is far from being over. Many folks get excited when we have these warm temperatures but it is way too early for this to continue. Just look at all the snow out west. That colder air will be here soon. In fact, it is supposed to begin the cool down by this weekend. Normal temperature for us right now is 43 daytime and 26 nights. The temperature is rising about 3 degrees per week so that says we will be heating for quite some time yet; just not as much as in January and February and mostly during the night time.

I sure hope we have a little more cold yet as I stocked the patio outside the walk in basement in Feb. I thought that would get me through the rest of winter. I have hardly touched it. I guess though I can move it back depending on what the good Lord brings. Have burnt a little under 3 cords.

I'm guestimating we burned around 4 - 4 1/2 cords this winter, compared to the 6 or so we burned last winter. That was before I fixed my draft issue (which I didn't even know existed until Jan or so this year), now that that is fixed I am anxious for a good hard blast of subfreezing air so I can see just how much of a difference it made. I'd like to be in the 5-6 cord range per year with both stoves running. We shall see (if we get a winter next year). That said, I don't think we are out of the woods yet, peeps......don't hold yer breath!!

Probably 2-1/2 to 3 cords. It was a mild winter but my house leaks heat pretty bad. I think the season is pretty much over here.

It's been warm here all Winter, La nina or whatever, so I think it's already Spring...here anyway. I don't have all that much wood in the on-deck circle so hauling it back to the stack won't be too hard.

Not totally sure of the volume burned this year but less than 1/3 of last years, if I burned that much at all, kinda strange having this years stacks still sitting there, so much the better for coming years.

We ended up burning 4.5-5 cord this year. Around 2 cord slab and punky wood, the rest was mostly seasoned oak. We burned 6.5 last year, not too bad. Still less than others I have talked to around here.

this is my first year. burned about 3.5 cord.
I had some pretty crappy wood too.
I am in a lot better shape for next year

Less than three cords here, usually about 4 cords. Plus I burned some wood in my workshop, but I usually just burn uglies and scraps in there. Has not been that cold this winter, we are usually still ice fishing this time of year. I know we will burn more before the fat lady sings.

I burned about 4 cords. Normally 5-6. So not too much less. Planning for next 2 years now. Have about 12 cord c,s,s.

Around 8 cord for 2 buildings, shed, and hot water. Still have some more insulation improvements to do and other improvements so hoping to use 8 cord on a normal winter after those are done. might add a hot tub this summer and that will be heated by wood to so maybe anothe cord for that?

I burned pretty close to 5 cords this winter. I planned on 6 so I am in good shape.
The good news is that I still have about 400 gallons of propane that I bought in February 2011 and the furnace only ran for 3 days while I was out of town.

I'll pipe in. Get it? ;lol
We've gone through about 3.3-3.5 cord so far. The last few fires were a bit tough to get going due to the temps, so I quit burning.
HOWEVER, we're due for some close to or below freezing weather by Sat. night, so,..... here come da fire, here come da fire.
We normally go through about 4.5-5 cord. I plan to use Spruce and W. pine for most of the rest of the fires we'll be having. Presuming, of course, that the stuff is ready to burn.
Trying to save the good stuff for next year, when I anticipate we'll get hammered.
No propain, oil, elec., or nat. gas has been used here for heat for a few years. We should do this again in a month or so.

Hey Stegman, I'm in southern Central MA and have used about 2.5 cords as well. I'm not giving up yet because next week we're back to low 50's it looks like. I'm sure it's just shoulder AM and PM fires, but still the same, it aint over yet for me.

We burned about 6 cords. Turned the OWB off for the season. Told the wife its time for blankets cause I refuse to pay the LP guy !

I've used just under 3 cords. I will run out in about a week. I will need to break into 2012-2013 wood a little bit. I have a small scrounge of oak I will get tomorrow, so it shouldn't hurt me too much burning a few wheel barrow's full in April.

We have had a colder than normal winter season two years in a row. I ran out last year in late April. I've used more wood this year than last year.

Send some of the 80* weather over here to Oregon!

Burned 6.5 cords myself (a full wood shed). Of course, 6 of that was EVIL pine. Since that is the type of wood I usually get free, looks like I'll have to build another wood shed to hold a REAL winter's worth of wood.

2.5 Cords here in Oklahoma as well. Part of the time we had to open some windows to let the heat out over winter since it never got cold enough for the heat my fireplace was putting out so if I were a more efficient wood burner I should have stayed at 2 cords. I haven't had a fire since the first week of March. Went ahead and moved all the wood to its stacks for summer. The electric furnace can carry us the rest of the way.

I'm not sure I've even burned 2 cords this year, compared to a usual 4 or 4.5. I can count on one hand the number of days that we burned 24 hours straight all winter. I'd be really surprised if I use much more this year, haven't burned in weeks. But there was an april not so many years ago where I burned a full cord. Go figure.
