Feeling the Heat

I was walking the property and came across this standing dead elm with the bark coming off. Dropped it last night and cut it up today. Not looking froward to splitting this, as I've had a difficult time is the past with dead elm!!! The other wood in the picture that is CSS is for next year. 2nd year burning, trying to get ahead.:)

Save them up for awhile and I could come over with my wood splitter. I don't think we are more than 10 miles from each other. I am only 6 miles from Freeport.

Keep pounding away at the wood bwhunter85, I hear elm throws some nice heat.

Gary, Thanks for the offer! I think my father in law is going to bring his splitter over. I am between Freeport and Lake O. Over near Hastings Rd. and Sisson.

That elm doesn't look like it will split bad at all. But the hydraulics are always appreciated. Sounds like you have some good help coming.

Looks like a decent collection toward getting years ahead. I've given up on trying to split elm without hydraulics. The stuff burns good, though.

That looks like it might be Red Elm. If so, splitting it by hand isn't too hard. I've split a few smaller ones recently. On the bigger ones you might be able to take chunks off from the outside in, or you can halve them with wedges.

Elm is decent int he BTU category and great for shoulder season. I split a huge tree with a hydraulic splitter and it sure makes it a lot easier than mauling it to death.

I bought my splitter with a buddy so we each own 50%. I don't lend it out but I do take it over to neighbors houses and help them split their wood for 1/4 of what we do I take home. Saves them half the time and the keeps me from having to buck a little. Of course I'm a wood hoarder with enough stacked up for 4 years.

I love seeing a pile of rounds with no bark on them because they were standing dead for so long! That will be some great wood come fall. Nice score!

Nice work Bwhunter. You can tell it is not red elm. I've split a pastel of dead elm like that and you are right, most of it splits quite easy.

Good workout indeed!
I'm cutting up 12 cord now, but am setting aside some 20" pieces for a promised splitter.
The rest I'm using my maul.
