Hope you all can read this. I received an update from Tom at Woodstock on the testing of the new steel cats and it looks like they are going to make a few changes and are continuing the testing. Interesting stuff, looks like they will be rebuilding these more like the PH layer cat instead of the compressed style in the other stoves. Also looks like there will be a gasket mod for the PH.

When you enlarge the image right click and view image. It will show the image at full size and is very readable.

I wonder if other steel cats will be produced in the same fashion. I have seen the collapsed cells a lot.

This will only make Woodstock better in the long run. I really love how they welcome input from customers and keep you updated on issues. I told Tom I'd be more than happy to be their guinea pig if they need some real world testing.

Another way it to click on show image in original, its right next to the x out button top right and you can open a window that makes it larger.

That doesn't work for me. It just closes the image box.

Can't damn em for trying to make a better product. If the companys didn't do this stuff we'd be burning in an old Clarion.lol

Has anyone heard anything on WS testing of the stainless cats that were sent back? I'm paticularly interested in the Progress cats that were sent back. My cat seems to be working fine still. I did just get the gasket mod but I haven't installed it yet.

Now, if only they can do something about that darn screen.

May be different browsers have different options, I dont have the option you suggested thats why I suggested what I did.

I'd like to be a tester too. My replacement is still working great, but it hasn't been working that hard this season either.

That would be great if sud chemie comes out with a good steel cat for all stoves, sounds like they can do it.

I got the email but haven't read it yet. Computer problems have kept me away. One of the cats that are being tested is from our stove so naturally we're curious.

I thought it was mine. :)

Could be yours I don't know just glad they're working on this. I think it makes sense about the way they are built. I can see wher compressing the cat into a rectangle can effect the flow and forces the exhaust to the middle. They should be all built like the PH, stacked layers with a gasket wrap. Make the cells all the same size like a ceramic cat.

It is great that they are working on it, and that they are keeping us posted as they do. I am confident that there will be a solution.

Weren't some folks having issues with the Progress cat, or am I remembering wrong?

Yes, I seemed to be, they sent me a new one. This has been working well, although lately it seems slightly harder to get the cat lit. I'm blaming it on shoulder season burning. Does anyone else find it more difficult to lit the cat in the shoulder season?

Warmer weather burning is a higher degree of difficulty due to less draft.

The way the article starts out it seems like there is no problem. Yet, IIRC we had several folks reporting declining performance with these cats, in cooler weather.

I thought so. My cat is still working fine. It definately needs a higher temp to light off then it did when new. I recall when some folks started having problems, I noticed mine was needing higher temps and I thought I was going to end up having issues too. I'm glad to report that it has seemed to settle in with consistent performance.

I haven't noticed a specific problem with getting the cat to light this spring, only the general problem of reduced draft which can make for a sluggish fire for a while which, in turn can delay the process of even trying to light the cat.

The Email says that wood seasoned longer than 3 years will kill the cat!
