Wood ID.....Hickory??

Not sure what this is but its heavy. Darker center as you can see was thinking some sort of Hickory? Definitely not Shagbark though thats for sure.

one of the Hickories, Shellbark perhaps. Someone more in the hickory regions will know for sure.
 
middle looks like Hickory, If it smells like it, then that is what it is. Hope you get alot if it .
 
Bark on Shellbark is pretty much identical to Shagbark.Thinking that's Mockernut or possible Pignut.

Some of the lightest color Black Walnut I've ever seen.Definetly not from Iowa.
 
By golly it sure could be walnut. Didn't pick up that color in second photo until second look.
 
I don't think that is walnut. I see the center in the second pic that is a little dark but I agree with Thistle too light for walnut. The end shot does not look like walnut either.
 
Walnut, agreed. Too much dark grain for hickory. Outer pale wood is right from my experience.
 
Guys....I can for sure rule out Walnut!! I have a ton of it in my stacks and on my property so I know what that looks like. It is MUCH heavier than Walnut thats why I was thinking some sort of Hickory......

We have Shagbark here too, but mostly I've cut Pignut. Heartwood looks darker than Pignut I've seen and the bark is much different.
 
It for sure is not dark enough to be Black Walnut from the midwest (I realize that he is from PA). The heartwood simply does not have enough contrast. Throw that in with the OP stating that he has a bunch of BW in his pile already - and this is not the same stuff...I don't think this stuff is black walnut folks.

No chance in my book. That is a split from a pretty good size trunk probally well over 20 inchs. (The bark does look like bl though)

Good point, the bark is always more coarse at the base of a big tree. I just went out to take a look at a Pignut that's at the edge of my yard. Even down low, the bark is more scaly and flat; Those ridges in the original pic look higher. And that bark looks too orange...
 
Sapwood is mighty dark, too...
 
We got a tough Wood ID here folks!! I'm pretty decent at Wood IDs but this one has me stumped. But I agree it was from a good sized tree. This place I got the wood from has some HUGE trees they cut down so.....bark is pretty ridgy.
 
I just cut a huge walnut down, that's definately not walnut. I'd say a hickory, maybe pignut.
