Good info, thanks for sharing. Bummer to have to wait until fall to light up the stove again. Sure was a cozy winter siting by the Progress!

The Cat industry cant decide what they want to do, ceramic,steel what should we do News flash both are crap. In my opinion cats are junk and are a way for lazy stove manufactures to make a steel box efficent. I have burned BlazeKings for years and a year ago I switched to a non cat stove and will never look back.

I've been running the steel cat for 3+ months. If I get the probe thermo up around 1000 and the flue around 600 or so for a few minutes, I can light off the combustor if the stove top is over 200.

I don't think it's a matter of deciding what they want to do, but rather looking at ways to improve. Both cat and non cat have their advantages and it looks like the future may be to combine both technologies like Woodstock, VC and Regency have come up with.

Sorry lad, but that is just emotions spouting off. Lazy stove manufacturers? Industry can't decide? You switched, okay. We switched too, but the other way around and are very pleased.
the auto makers came out with new catalyst combustors a few years ago...some sort of mineral sprayed on the platinum..to make them burn hotter and last longer while using a lot less platinum...may be in a couple of years we will see them available for wood stoves...the price for precious metals is forcing new innovations...

VC is is no longer what they used to be, they are now a second rate stove company not to mention they dont make a Hybrid stove they are either a cat or non cat. With VC if you want a cat stove you put the cat in and if you want a non cat you take the cat out they havent combined the tecnology so it can be run as a true Hybrid.
Regency is a a good stove. They have just started producing a cat stove within the last 8 months.
Woodstock is a good stove, I have seen many of them in the states but as far as a heater for the interior of Alaska I dont think the Soapstone construction is up to the challange. Hearthstone stoves have a huge failure rate here.

Yeah I suppose the VC is a different animal but you still have the choice of either or.
It would be interesting to see how the new hybrid Woodstock works out in your climate.
