I have been looking to buy my first saw but im unsure about what on to buy that wont break the bank. would the ms 230 be enough just for cutting a cord or 2 a year?

Try to buy a little more saw than you're gonna need. You'll thank yourself for it down the road. Watch your local Craigslist or classifieds, always deals in there.....

About a year ago I picked up a late model 026 in really nice shape, with two bars off of Craigslist for $175. :)

Only a few ounces heavier than an MS230, the 026 (predecessor to the MS260) is a professional saw, far more capable and better built.

I'm all for used saws but this poster mentioned this will be his first saw. Getting into the whole CL/ebay thing really is a good way for a novice to get taken advantage of pretty quick.

If it was the MS230 with the DURO chain on it you're looking at, that's a fantastic choice for a 1-2 cord year situation. The DURO chain would be quite forgiving of dirty wood and not require the frequent sharpening conventional chains need. The comments regarding the MS250 being a bigger saw on the same platform are true but outfitting one with the same features as a MS230 Duro would be more $$. If the dealer was willing to swap a DURO chain instead of the stock chain in order to entice you to upgrade to the MS250C then that's a no-brainer deal.
