I've seen 4 way wedges advertised for verticle splitters. Has anyone used one? I assume it could be used in the horizontal position to increase output. Any experiences?

Actually, pretty much every four-way head I've ever seen has been on a horizontal splitter. I've never seen one used vertically (up and down) but can't see why it wouldn't work.

Most of the ones I've seen simply slip over the existing wedge and are just held there by gravity. I think the idea is that if a split gets wedged between the wings and the beam, it will lift the wedge rather than do damage. Not sure how well it would work in vertical mode. It might pop off and fall into your lap or onto your foot.

Wouldn't use one based on different sized wood. I don't want my large stump getting the same treatment as a
8" log. I'll turn them once. I like the single.

Never used one on a vertical. Northern has bolt-on wedge wings to make a 4-way vertical on their splitters. Hydraulically adjusted wedge on a horzontal machine is the cat's azz! Add a log lift and now we're really gettin' down.

Dedicated 4 way's are only fast if the wood is "right-sized".

I was thinking of only using it in horizontal mode with the easier rounds. I'm thinking it may add too much torgue to the moving wedge, I don't know.

I doubt it will hurt the wedge. You're not going to increase the force the machine is capable of putting on the wedge so I wouldn't worry about breaking anything.
