Big Tom likes gaurding my firewood

This big Tom turkey is somewhat tame and is always in my yard around my woodstacks and seems to be gaurding the wood LOL He wakes me up at 6 in the morning with his constant gobbling. I don't have the heart to shoot him, he's been hanging around my house with some hens for 2 years now.

LOL, Nope, those are some maple logs and big rounds I recently scrounged off the state land next to me, and there are a few big red pine logs that I will be getting milled in a few weeks.

I don't mind the gobbling because I'm usually getting up about that time anyway. What I hate are the damn whip-poor-whills that will sit just outside our bedroom window and start at about 4:30 AM !! They usually show up here about the first of May, so anytime now more than likely....ugghh

Dennis our turkey population is way down up here, by more than 50% from just 5-6 years ago. Too many fox, coyotes and wolves. I shoot every damn one I see.

LOL, I love turkey, one of my favorite foods, but I just don't have the heart to kill him. I can walk up to within 30 feet of him easily. Last year there were 2 big toms here, but one was shot right off the highway about 1/4 mile from here. I was walking my dog and heard the shot. The SOB probably shot him right out the window of the vehicle. I suppose this guy will end up getting killed the same way sooner or later. We enjoy having them around. they are comical as hell to watch at times.

Pat, our turkey population was down for quite some time but last year seemed to bring lots of new chicks into the fold. On the whip-poor-wills, they really get to you when they land on the chimney! Had that happen a couple times. However, for some reason we have not had any of those birds for several years now. We miss them.

I can not believe how loud whip-poor-whills are. I had one that used to land on the peak of my roof and start at about 4:15 AM a few years ago. Sounded like he was in the room with us ! Strangely I have not heard any yet, they are late this year so far. If I can catch any I'll ship them down to you....I WON'T miss them !! LOL
