Charly's post reminded me that it's time to make plans for this year's open house. I'm seeking the most economical transport route. Maybe some of you seasoned travelers will be able to advise. If there is a more economical route into the area than into the Lebanon airport, please advise. When we lived in Colorado Springs, it was $190 cheaper to fly into Denver that CS and then it was only a 60 mile drive to my place. So, I'm seeking something similar. Don't know anything about that region, but, if it's possible to save a good deal of money, that might make the trip possible. I'll be retired by then and the income picture is not completely clear, with some family things that'll be happening before then.
Research is starting, SO, if y'all have some wisdom, please share it. Hope to see you all there. (I know, I know, dates have not been set yet, but I'm a-startin' now!) Thanks!

I am pretty sure the Lebanon airport is right across the street from Woodstock.
We stayed at a hotel right down the street from there....everything is in very close proximity.....
Dennis is making his way down the board now...;lol I am sure he will chime in...

Im pretty farmiliar with the routes and your best route is to take southwest from Denver to Manchester nh with im sure a connection and a car rental, rather than taking a flight into Boston and then getting on Cape Air to Lebanon. The drive time from Manchester to Lebanon is 45 mins to an hour. If not, Cape Air from Boston is the only airline service to Lebanon. Or maybe a bus service from Boston airport might work as well. Hope that helps.

The airport is only a few 100 yrds from Woodstock.Right across the road.

I just checked the Southwest schedule and found out that the service to Manchester will be discontinued as of 9.28.12!! Don't that beat all! Now why would they do that now? <sigh!> How far is it from Boston, or is there another option, like maybe Albany? Everything up there is so scrunched together, so it's difficult for me to tell relative distances, so it looks like it's to the Atlas for me.

A lot of airport traffic for Manchester is moving over to Portland ME (including southwest). Unfortunately its a longer drive than Manchester (about 2.5 hour). Manchester is convenient if you havent been in the area before. Its not that far of a drive to the Maine Coast, LLBeans store in Freeport is a nice place to visit and Portland Head light in Cape Elizabeth is a very popular light house to stop by. From Manchester its about a hour and half drive north to the White Mountains, there is a nice loop going up 93 then onto RT 25 east to RT 16 north to Conway, then take the RT 302 up through Crawford Notch then south on RT 3 and down through Franconia notch and back to Manchester. Lebanon is about a 1 hour drive via I89 from Manchester. If you are train buff there is Conway Scenic Railroad and the Cog railroad up MT washington to stop by on the White Mountain loop. The american Precison Museum in Springfield VT isnt that far away if you are into old machine shop equipment and tooling.

Burlington, VT is 1.5 hours away you can check that airport.

I'm 17 miles from the Albany Airport , a 3hr and 20 minute ride to Woodstock for me. By a Cessna 172 from here to the Lebanon Airport, 50 minutes;).

Hody Cow, that ALL sounds like fun!! I mapped Portland to Lebanon and got a 3 hour drive of about 163 miles. Not very direct either, BUT, with all that nifty stuff to see, I might never make it to Open House! Every stinkin' thing you mentioned hits an interest area of mine! I'd probably never make it past LL Bean's fly-fishing department. It's amazing y'all have so much stuff so close together!! Neat!

for Texas or Midwest/West folks jumping around New England should be a cake walk for you! LOL (our lil' tiny states could fit into Texas 10x over).

Ive been on every inch of the Conway Railroad (have close friends in Ossipee), make sure if any of you do it... take the Notch Tour Train! You will NOT regret taking the time to do this!!!

If you do fly into Burlington Stowes a nice play to visit/stay, we go up there just about every year, theres also a working granite quarry off Route 89 that you would pass on your way to lebanon thats pretty cool to see.

If you like fly fishing there is a orvis store in or near Manchester VT, in the case that you fly into Burlington you might be able to hit that store. The LL Bean store is awesome and their fly fishing and hunting section is great. Other than southwest, if you still want to go into Manchester, NH you can just connect through NYC or Philly on US airways. Southwest still offers a good amount of flights out of MHT but they started doing more flying out of Boston now. Albany, Portland, and Burlington will cost you more since the regional airlines recently jacked up their prices more than the mainline carriers, however Portland, Albany and Burlington do have service from Southwest, Airtran (aka southwest), Delta and Jetblue, it just depends on how many connections you want to make. It's an hour drive from Manchester to Lebanon and from Boston just add another 1:10 or longer depending on the traffic. Plus rental cars maybe more expensive out of Boston, so it may just be cheaper to take the Cape Air flight from Boston to Lebanon. Hope this helps.

I'm thinking you would pay quite a premium to fly into West Lebanon. It's not much of an airport. Probably better off flying to one of the major airports and renting a car. If your gonna make the trip from West Texas to New England, you're gonna want to spend some time looking around anyway. You will think you are on a different planet when you get there!

Yessir! I agree with that! Was up to White Plains, Fishkill, Burlington and environs, with IBM. Also went to NYC one night. Definitely a different planet and the Capital of Claustrophobia! Really liked Burlington area, NYC, not so much, but there IS a nice story even there. Could spend months roaming around up there, but since I'll be coming alone, won't be nearly as much fun, so I need to stick to business and limit expenditures. The whole purpose of this project is to meet the folks on this board and see Woodstock's shop and people and it's gonna be a challenge to limit it to that. I'm just hopin' it will be the time when ALL of the folks I "know" will be there. That will be trip enough! (But I WOULD love to see and do all the things that are there.)
Thanks for the info. I'm checking it all out as fast as I can.

Let me get this straight, your flying over halfway across the county alone just to visit and check out a wood stove factory? you sir are hardcore!

I live just about between White Plains and Fishkill. I drove from Pecos, TX to Austin, TX one day. I can understand your claustrophobia up here.

You are a rare person to have experienced our wide open spaces. It gives you the unusual perspective how we Texans respond to the "closeness" of the northeast. It isn't something we think about. It's as much a surprise to us as anyone the first time, but it IS very real. We grow up with openness. When it disappears, it gets mighty uncomfortable!

I spent a summer out in Northwest Illinois about 20 years ago. Actually not too far from where Jags lives. There was nothing much more than cows, corn, and hogs. The sky went straight from East to West, one could see for miles. When I got back home to the Northern suburbs of NYC I was pretty uncomfortable for a few weeks. If you can see more than 10 miles here, it is "a view", and you are either on a high hilltop or in the higher floors of a tall building.

I used to laugh at the Montana license plate, "Big Sky Country." How could it be bigger? Much more than 180 degrees, maybe a bit for curvature of the earth?

Then you get out there - it's HUGE!

typically its called a "view" because there is actually something to look at besides miles and miles of flat ground and grass. I could never live in one of those fly-over states. ;) but that's just me.

Yes, I understand that. Living in West Texas is something like living in many other places: "Y'kinda have to be born here to live here!" But a fly-over state also has it's advantages. Out here, visibility is only given to 10 miles by the NWS, but we typically have views from 100 to 150 miles. Y'get used to that pretty quickly as Flatbedford mentioned.

Well Hello Terry! Good to see you back on the board again. I'm betting it has warmed a bit for you out there. And I know exactly what you mean about the 100+ mile views out there. I never thought I'd like the south and especially the SW part of the US. However, I came to really enjoy it but so far have resisted moving. Probably if we ever did it would be to Utah though. Love the red rock country.

Hey Scotsman, I thought you were going to fly your own plane to Woodstock? But seriously, perhaps we should keep in touch via email. I just checked and I do still have yours if you haven't changed. Not sure but perhaps I could pick you up somewhere west of NH because we plan on going again this coming fall. However, our plans are really wide open at this point. We could fly but we might drive. Then again, we might visit our son in PA and then head to Woodstock from there. We'd also like to pay a few visits to some folks who are on the forum but live out in that neck of the woods. In short, we could keep in touch and finalize the plans perhaps in late August or thereabouts. I don't think the dates have been set for the shindig just yet but we'll know when they make the plans.

Heck Terry find ya a member here that is going and lives near an airport. Fall out of the sky there and pile in the car with them and go to Woodstock. Gives ya more vistin' time. Not to mention saving the car rental and getting lost.

Hey Bart! That sounds like a good idea. I just don't know where anyone lives with respect to an airport and Woodstock. I'll keep eyes and ears open. Re: getting lost-hadn't thought about that, but it sure looks real possible up in the Maine/NH area. :)
