1st tank new saw

picked up a new 362 this week. $640 w/20" bar, my first pro saw. i'm happy to support my local lawn and garden shop. they've been in business since 1933 and since they've brought in stihl products they're really booming. i also got my oregon log splitter from him and i'm very happy with it. his prices are good. plus he's there for service, parts, etc.

all i can say is...whoa. what a saw. i ran a tank thru it last evening, mostly at about 1/2 throttle. limbed up a big fallen pine, then buzzed thru the trunks about 20" accross. that sucker wasn't even sweating, throwing some serious chips while the weight of the saw was doing all the work. this is with the stock safety chain. i bought a chisel chain which i'll put on once i feel its broken in a little. i can't even imagine.

That 362 is all the Saw that any Man needs and should provide you with years and years of service. Sounds like you have a good dealer too.
Congratulations on the purchase.... I can see the smile from a few states away ;)

Pics??

The biggest saw I had until about this time last year was a 455 Rancher. Which is a good saw. I still use it quite a bit.. Then I picked up a very lightly used 036 from my buddy... Wow.... Love it. Its definitely my most used saw now. Love my 460, but not practical to run all day with an 036 that Rips.

Will last you many years & cut many cords of wood.

Hang on when you put the RS chain on it, it'll be thru the cut before you know it. :)
 
Wait till you got about 6 or 8 tanks through that thing. Its just gonna get better from here on out. The chisel chain will also make a big difference in speed of cut. It will be like running a light saber. WASABI:p

Congrats on the purchase. I already finished all my cutting till I get more and Im already getting the itch to do more cutting. Enjoy.
 
Running a good saw is an amazing feeling. Puts a smile on my face every time I run one. I've got all older saws, but they are ported and tuned, and I keep the chains razor sharp and the bars dressed, and they cut like mad. But the newer saws, like the one you just bought, have some high revving motors and when you keep the chain sharp, they are an absolute blast to cut with!! Wait til you put that full chisel chain in it.......it'll amaze you!

Congrats on the new saw!

Except when revving without load (outside of wood) for a few tanks of fuel, you don't have to baby your saw for some "break-in" period. It's designed to cut at WOT (wide open throttle), even when new.

Gotta have some Stihl Pics..........

Its no 362 (predecessor), but the 036 is a Bad Motha. I have an 18" currently on the 036 and its ridiculous. Put a 20" on the 460 (more ridiculous), and a 16" on my 455 (what a difference between a 20").
I have an 18", 20", 2-25"'s, and a 32" for the Big Stihls. Want to put the 18" on the 460. But see absolutely NO Reason ;)

Had a guy walk in the store, bought a MS460 and insisted on putting a 16" or 18" bar on it (can't remember which). I asked him why so small (most wanted to put 28" or longer on 460's) and he said "for firewood." Wonder if he was a Hearth.com member. I was young(er), relatively new, and he was paying cash for a $1000 saw so I didn't argue. >>

Zap put a small bar on his 660 (thinking 16" or 18!). Thats the only reason I put the 20" on the 460. It turned a Fast Saw, into a Stupid, Ridiculous, Insane, Magnificent, Phenomenal, Spectacular, and Fantastic Fast Saw ;)

Big Saws with Big Bars are nice. But Big Saws with Big Bars are Faster ;)

Still cant imagine what that 660 (small bar) would do in the cut of some 14" diameter Spuce! !!

Im gettin excited. I gotta go back to work ;)

I suspect all you need to do is point it in the general direction of a tree, and then watch it fall out of despair.

036/36x with a 20" bar and a sharp full chisel chain is the best firewood making setup there is, in my biased opinion.

First, that is one hell of a lineup you got there...all look very nice.

To answer your question..."because you can" or "because it would be fun" are both valid and acceptable answers.

I'll take "overpowered" for $500 Alex. Answer: This saw with this bar is a vulgar display of power when it comes to light firewood duty. What is a 460 with 18" bar. Correct.

The lighting and pic all make it look defect free. Also males the White, look much whiter. It has some signs of abuse. But not much. I got it off of my buddy at work. In the 10 yrs I have known him. He only ran it a few hrs. Sold his 34 or 35 ton Huskee splitter and then sold his 036 to me. He quit burnin wood and went to pellets completely. He did keep his 029. Just in case he ever needed a saw. Im tryin to get that off of him now. Either trade my 455 or buy it ansld sell my 455! Then it will be an All Stihl line-up ;)

What do you guys think of the 026, I got a bead on a used one, asking price is $300, all tuned with new bar and chain.

Thanks Dexter, Ive been looking for a good used Stihl. Im going to take a look at it.
