I'm getting the hang of it now. Look out 2012 here I come! The wood has kind of a peppermint gum kinda smell.
 
I just saw your post saying that the tree has a minty smell to it. That means it is Black Birch.

I believe that there is Black Birch. I'm sure it's a birch of some kind at the very least.
 
holy crap I may be right on an in the field guess. It definetly has a minty smell.
 
Without a doubt that is black birch. We have tons of it where we deer hunt and I find myself breaking off a branch while hunting and chewing on it. Burns nice too!
