I've been eyeing the Jotul 550 for an install this winter. I'm surprised that the side wall clearance is 54" from the center of the stove as this seems rather large compared to other stoves, (Morso 5660 NA is only 17" from the side of the stove). Is the Jotul really that much hotter of a stove that it needs this huge clearance? My closest sidewall from the center of the stove is 35". This would be my only limitation with the Jotul, what are my options to protect this surface and still have the stove be safely installed? Any help or advice you can give would be greatly appreciated!

It's important to note that different companies list spec differently. As noted, Jotul is listing them from the center of a wide insert. Morso is listing them from the side of the insert. When this difference is taken into consideration, the differences are not as great.

You need to follow the mfg. tested clearances. If they accept clearance reduction with an approved heat shielding method, then those distances can be reduced. If you can post a picture of your setup we can offer more guidance on options.

I checked the manual and based on the width of the body of the stove that would put the side of the insert at 39" to the sidewall which is a lot. I would look for another insert that will fit your clearances without having to resort to wall protection. There are a lot of other good stoves out there that don't need that much space.

Not sure I follow that. The C550 stove body is 30" wide and requires from centerline, 21 3/4" clearance to the side ("C" dimension). The centerline is at 15", so doesn't that make the clearance 6 3/4" from the side? Am I interpreting this incorrectly?

Your interpretation is correct, for the 'C' dimension. C is the measurement to side trim, from centerline. I think the OP is concerned about the 'D' measurement which is from centerline to side wall of room. D (the nearest perpendicular wall) must be 54" from centerline or 32 1/4" from the inside of side trime.

Thanks, I wasn't understanding the question. That makes sense. For comparison, the PE Summit insert needs only 8.5" from the edge of the insert to the side wall or adjacent side facing. The Enviro Venice 1700 comes in at 10".

I looked at the 550 at my local dealer today. I'm not sure if I can install it because my 'E' measurement is only 40.5" I have so much decorative molding below the mantel.

Can you post a picture of the fireplace area?
