So last fall I found an area of blowdowns 3 miles back in on county land. Iron co, WI. Pulled some out with a chain and atv, too muddy. I've been watching for it to dry up this spring, last week loggers put a road in there,so I went to forestry dept, she says" Oh, no, you can't cut there, even blow downs, without permission of the bid holder". So I was bummed, but asked and answered. Next day I'm out riding, run into a foremann for the same logger, he says " Sure go ahead. Don't cut anything standing." WHOOPDEEFRICKINDOO!!!! This is the fourth load of hard maple, these went down with the root ball, so they have leaves and are quite green. Heavy as hell. Also a load of ash that was dead and down at least a year, no rot or punk. Rains done, gotta get splitting. IMG_0831.JPGIMG_0832.JPG

Congratulations....nice load
FYI...if you upload pics use the thumbnail option, then we don't get these huge pics;)

That's great. Sure wish we had hard maple in S Jersey. They have tons of it up in the northern end of the state, but none down here on the coastal plain. Splits pretty nicely, right? I hand split everything, so I look for nice clean logs and rounds. Nice score and great pictures!

Nice load of clean premium wood. It splits pretty easy when green, sometimes in a few hour a split starts in the round, a target for splitting.
I see you split a few big ones so not so heavy to load.
Sounds like you have a good source for a year's worth or more of wood.

You can tell you have a load, eh? Over a cord of CSS fire wood already,
Looks like one round was so heavy it bent the tail gate . LOL :)
Nice wood hauler/work truck, perfect for your needs on the logging roads ;)

More trips & more pictures soon

Splits fer chit, kinda stringy. I had to split the biggest rounds just to carry them 25 yards thru the woods to my truck. Used a sledge and wedge and a fiskars. Gotta Speeco 22 ton at home, the wedge is too short for the biggest rounds, but its FREE WOOD! So I'll keep going back until they start logging it...

Excellent score! That work won't seem near as bad when the house is 70+ in January, & the furnace ain't runnin. A C

Nice score, Zeke. Keep it coming, that hard maple is an excellent overnighter wood, you can load 'er up at night and foggettaboutit.....It's a little tough to split, and will take a while to dry out, but well worth the work. Get it split and stacked ASAP so she gets to dryin..

Who in the heck would say no to a monkey with a torch??

I don't like cutting this time of year but have done it. You gotta make hay while the sun shines. Get as much as you can while you have access. All that sweatin' now will be forgotten on those cold January days.

So I went to get a load this morning before it got too hot and there's a guy logging in there. I backed out, I guess I'll wait now until I can cut tops. Not the guy I talked to, but I try to stay outta a working man's way. Ended up with over 3 full cords, nice and straight, Maple and Ash. Back to cutting tops...
