So far I am up to about 23 c/s/s face cords of wood with more than half being ready to burn this winter. At what point do I stop? I have room for about another 5-6 face cords and then thats it unless I get or build a shed. Its a mix of ash, maple, oak, black locust, sycamore, elm, cherry, pine, apple, cottowood, birch & beech Last year was my first year burning and with the mild winter I burned about 7-8 face cords or so 2 of that was pallet wood. I have read alot about being 2-3yrs ahead but it seems I'm already there. Thoughts would be appreciated as always....NordicSplitter out

Stop? What do you mean? Stop is not an option. Stack it higher, wider, in the corner. Whatever it takes.

1) Are you & your neighbor on good terms?'
2) How big is their property?
3) Is your roof sturdy?
4) Grass is overrated.Less time mowing means more time to cut & store wood.

+1. It seems likely that there are 'real' winters in the future. The more wood you have C/S/S, the less that feeling of loss when you move a winter's worth of wood off the supply and see your shrunken supply (and think "Oh man, that sucks"). Got an empty closet, attic space, room over the garage rafters, a neighbor's yard? Bottom line- keep up the good work!

Re-calculated after this mornings post and I am up to 29.5 face cords c/s/s. I guess my problem or addiction(lol) is that I have access to a tree service lot that supplies me with all the wood I need for free. My Dad use to say:"Boys, Its only free until someone says its not free anymore" Thats my concern.I do have a 7x7 rubbermaid shed I could empty out. Haha

Someone reportedly asked John D. Rockefeller "What is enough?"
Rockefeller's reply: "Just a little bit more."

Make hay when the sun shines. If you have access to wood, get it. You may not have that access tomorrow. Excuse me, I must attend my meeting for OCwD.

+1..........What is a face cord, anyway?

A face cord measures 8' wide x 4' high, the depth of a face cord may vary. So its about 1/3 of a cord and you have 29.5 face cords your looking at almost 10 cords.
Looking good on wood.

Last year was my first year burning and with the mild winter I burned about 7-8 face cords...I have read alot about being 2-3yrs ahead but it seems I'm already there.

If you end up burning five cords in an average temp Winter, you are only two years ahead. Sorry, but you have to keep going. ==c

I don't understand. Not room for much more unless you build a shed? You can stack just as much outdoors as you can in a shed. Keep cutting!

Buzzed through another 2 face cords this afternoon. Mostly Ash. Will be splitting and stacking next week. Sure glad Ash splits easy.

Build a shed and keep going, three years ahead is a good goal to aim for, that way your wood is slways seasoned two years minimum.

When your free firewood project is never ending, causing you to think about it WAY too much, to the point that it affects other projects that you could or should be doing. When you run out of space to stack the chit, and one of your stacks is falling over once a month. When your wife rolls her eyes every time you go to cut firewood and wants to know how many years ahead we are, (at least 1/2 way thru '17). When you wreck your knee due to an old skiing injury, and you've been limping around for 3 weeks. And, last but not least, when you start to have added costs associated with repairing the rented splitter or other machinery, adding to the cost, time, & aggravation of the project, and, oh, by the way, you're overdue for a nice chainsaw injury because you've been using it so much lately.

Never Stop :)

cir8ter, I don't think that your case is similar to his

Right, so he shouldn't stop.......Or, maybe he could come up with his own criteria on when to stop. The above happens to be mine, LOL.

If you can STOP;
you're not addicted.
That might be a good thing.
But when to "start back cutting more" comes into question then.;?

I'm not sure I'll ever feel the feeling that "I have enough".
So I keep cutting when I can & hoping to achieve that feeling ;em
Kudos to those that have enough, I'm envious :)

I had too much spruce, well thought I did, so I gave a cord to the neighbor for his outside fire pit,
Now I need more spruce, & that feels better. ;)

Stop? WTH. That's no way to behave here. You are SOOOOO close to losing your Hearth card, I can't even tell 'ya.;lol
Told 'ya not to give that away, Dave.
Oh wait......no I didn't.

Best answer to far . . . at least the realist answer . . . as for asking us "addicts" when do you have too much . . . that's like asking a chunky kid if he has had enough ice cream.
