Tried stacking some wood today

I'm sick of this heat...wish it was fall!

I hear that. The deerflies here even seem to LIKE the insect repellent. Pesky, ornery persistent little buggers... Good for you knowing to get out of the heat. Deerfly dinner: drink some DEET, then bite the human!

My buddy texted me today and asked if I had the hickory tree split. Ummmm, no.

I've got more to split and stack but in this weather it won't get done. I waited until after supper and walked down to the wood lot and turned around back up to the house. I'm like my old chain saw, don't work well in hot weather.

half hour here, half hour there gets the job done..........little by little

At least this heat is good for something.......stacks are drying, checking, shrinking like crazy.

Dave, believe it or not, it's almost too hot & sticky to sit in even the shade here lately. Our dew points/ humidity are up into the upper 60's. I don't often complain about the summer weather, but this is getting bad. We had a very brief shower today around noon, & then the sun came out. Went back to work after lunch, & it felt like a sauna. I'm waiting for the weekend " cool down " into the lower 80's & less humidity to do anything other than what I have too outside. This is driving me nuts. A C

Not that bad here, able to split and stack some after work. Running out of room in last preferred stacking area. Will probably go along driveway. Local hardware store not giving away pallets anymore (they're burning them, supposedly). So, going to stack on ground. Done it before, should be okay.

Wicked hot here too and I'm still splitting and throwing up wood. Thankfully there's the pond for immediate relief, today's an off day, probably go on the boat as long as it's not too windy.

This caveman can't stack a row of wood that will stand threw the winter so I just throw up the split wood in huge piles...crude but effective. Happy 4th to all.

The wood will still be there when it cools down. Splitting and stacking in this weather can be ridiculous. Here in VA we are getting to the point where low 90s is a cool day. I still split and stack some, but try to keep it to morning/evening and no more than an hour at a time.

I posted a while back about one of my stack posts breaking. Yesterday, I thought I'd put in a new one (poplar that was cut about the same time the old one broke), and restack some wood.
I got the post partially done and stacked a 32' section.........one split high.
Then, I went back in the house. Might try yo get another split high done today. As Timj says, a little at a time gets it done. Our weather (like Dennis') is due to cool a bit by Saturday, but I can't wait.

We are still waiting for our first July 80 day here in Western Oregon. Yesterday, was 68 and cloudy. The forecast says that will not happen until this Saturday, although we'll have sun and 70's this week finally. We had a couple 80 in May and June, but none in July yet. I'm glad I cut/split/stacked my firewood before it got too hot.

Just think, after the heat wave, the splits will be half the weight, and it will be a walk in the park to stack!

I don't blame you Sav, I'm ready for some cooler weather too. Only 83 here today but real muggy, we do have a small breeze which makes it feel better.

Well, I got another 3-4 layers done before the sun hit me. It's like a dang sauna out there, even w/o the sun.
I'm back in the house. Window shaker running. Ahhhh.

I'm going in stages, 1/2 hour out, 1 hour in.... running out of out time, aside from firing up the BBQ.

Luckily, most of my stacking is done for now. Getting a delivery this weekend for the 13, on the other end of the house.

I remember those hot muggy summer days in WV, sit under a shade tree & sweat.
No AC in the house for us back then.
Family moved to PA, & I worked a summer job with a block layer. Hot days mixing mud & carrying 8" concrete blocks.
Builds character
It'd be a toss up to which is worse, laying concrete blocks or CSS fire wood on 90+ degree days.
Of course being many years younger back then, I'd recover pretty quick & be ready to work the next day.

How did folks get along with out AC back then? We hadn't been spoiled with it yet & didn't know any better LOL
& yea, some days were just as hot & muggy in July & August.

mmmmm......... I'm saying hauling block & mixing mud is worse. At least stacking wood I can take a break as necessary, & yea I remember the pre AC days as well. Hope it's 72 sunny for 24 hrs. & no humidity for ya up there. A C

Dave, 2 years ago, we built a house for some local folks and I signed on with the mason to do the grunt work, before we got to the building. Hot, hot, hot.
Mixing mud and hauling block in 90 sunup to sundown when you're 56 is a BAD idea. Don't do it.
Trust me.

Warm here today. Thermo said 98 at about 2 o'clock. It is down a couple degrees now. No firewood work being done here. I did work a little in the garden in between dives into the pool. Supposed to be a little hotter before the weekend cool down. Right now I don't miss the woodstove one bit. I'll take no shirt for a while over looking for a jacket. Cool and cold will come soon enough.

64°, 64% hum., overcast, chance of showers. rain last night, . House gets to low 70s during the day, mid 60s at night. Perfect for what I'm acclimated to.
Mosquitoes pretty bad today, got the fire pit fired up & it helps keep them away.

PapaD; I was 18 yrs old or so when doing those jobs. Hopefully I'll never attempt those kinda jobs in the future. A 14" round is about my limit to pick up, bigger & they are rollers
