The question you have to ask is your time conmitment Do you have access to a cheap source of wood? do you have the time to process it and stack it.?
have you consired smokless top loading? have you considered a thermoatically controled burning? a lot less fiddling if you do, longer heating cycles.

elkimmeg has a good point. How much will wood cost? The only cost for me to get mine is the gas and oil for my chainsaw and I split it by hand. As many other members have said wood does not have to be messy. I fill a wheelbarrow at the woodpile and leave it in the garage. I then use a box to bring it into the house and throw it in the stove. Very little mess.
