I found this tree in my woods today DEAD! I believe it is a pignut or bitternut hickory. Looking at the base of the tree it looks like sawdust is scattered everywhere. There was a bug on the side of the tree but im not sure it is the one responsible for killing the tree. The Ash borer is really killing off the ash trees here but what I'm wondering is what kind of bug will kill a hickory?

I think that is a cicada wasp and if it is they live in the ground.

looks like termite sawdust
I'd worry more about the vine than the bug.

Don't know why i didn't think about termites. Is there a way to kill the termites before dragging this thing home for firewood?

Termites eat wood in contact with the ground.
Probably only infested the lower few feet of the trunk anyway, When you get it bucked up, they'll leave

Bugs may have moved in after the tree was dead. Leave the bottom few feet blocked up in the woods for the summer and the termites will be gone by fall.

Thanks for the information. I've never had to deal with a tree with termites. Hope they don't go to another tree.
