Hi I am new to this forum I have just picked up a HS Tarm 504 boiler and am rebuilding it I have burned wood sence I was 16 and started playing with coal last year which I liked very much.
What I was wondering is has anyone tryed coal in these boilers what I wanted to do is burn wood in it during warmer weather then when it gets cold try burning coal in it if anyone has tried this I would like to here about it
Thank you
Bill

I used to import and sell this boiler.
You can burn hard coal in it, but you have to learn the technique. The best way is using the optional "coal baffle" which does two things - well, actually three...

1. Makes the firebox smaller
2. Put in uprights at the rear so you can pile the coal and not block the output.
3. Puts a baffle in the ash area to direct more air up through the coal bed.

It can be done without the coal baffle, but it may be harder to get the hang of it. It would be great if another 504 owner here would give you some hints (crossing our fingers)....

This PDF gives some idea of how the coal baffle installs:

Thank you webbie I have another question when you put your bottom plate in the bottom (replaceing the back two greates ) can you take out the upright plates in the back leave the bottom plate in and run wood in it for the the warmer days of winter any information that you can give me about this boiler would be really appreciated
Thank you Bill

Also, one other thing to be sure of. As in all solid fuel fired equipment, good accurate air control is essential. Be sure to check all door gaskets for leakage. coal is very touchy about air control. You could easily get a runaway boiler if you cant control the air nearly 100 percent. I check my door gaskets with a lighter. While the fire is burning I run the lighter flame all around the door gasket to see if the flame gets sucked in, if it does, adjust your door catch or replace the gasket.

Thanks Mike I was debaiting if I should pull the doors off and put new gaskets on them I thing I just made up my mind
