Many only clean their cat's once per year. Unless you have reason to believe it's become fouled, there's no need to pull and clean it. Then again, it takes less than 5 minutes to clean, and it never hurts to check it from time to time.

neumsky, I think I have a dead horse over here that needs another flogging. You're clearly the man for the job.
If you have'nt noticed...This is what he wanted to talk about as indicated by the TITLE!

Absolutely...but the guy's not going out and buy a fire dragon.

Exactly why a clarified "Non-EPA" in my prior post. Please, let us move on now. I can hear the mods walking up the hall as we speak.

I'm not so sure that a newby wood understand that one but I'm with you! I apologize for not being a little clearer with that also.

I would get the Blaze King Chinook 30. That's the stove I would get if I had no worries about budget or wood storage. I like the looks of it and it has the BK cat insane burn technology. BurnIt13, good luck with your new place!

neumsky, you're delving into ugly territory here knocking on Dennis. He's royalty around here, and for a good reason. He knows his stuff and he's a hell of nice guy.

Were I to be designing and building a new house, I would forget about a wood stove and progress to a Russian style fireplace or gassifier radiant heating system. Radiant heat is THE way to go, bar none. I have lived in several houses with radiant heat (with either Russian style fireplaces and hydronic floor heating loops), and they are far more comfortable than burt air heating (such as gas furnaces and wood stoves). My first choice would be the Russian fireplace home, the second would be a wood gassifier and water tank system to pump warm water around the house and heat the hot water. That could be either an OWB outside or an exterior fed gassifier firebox on the perimiter of the house. I prefer that the wood be outside along with the smoke, ash, bugs and dust.

I'm really scared now! You know we've had this discussion many times...and it always seems like its the cat guys against the non cat guys. I don't care if you've been on here longer than someone else. I will consider it but it doesn't rule my roost. This site is about opinions and experiences and if I have one, By golly, I should have the right to speak my peace. If I'm wrong...I'll admit it and go down the road. Cats have some advantages and so do non cats...I'll leave it at that. OP...It's up to you now! BTW...I'm a nice guy too!

Yeah, but for a lot of us, there's still something to having that fire going in the living room, and watching caveman TV on a cold and snowy night.

I have had both of them. They each have their strong points however for me the PE T6 has been a great stove and at this time I wouldn't consider going back.

Certified...you would'nt go back to a cat model?

Yeah, but for a lot of us, there's still something to having that fire going in the living room, and watching caveman TV on a cold and snowy night.

At my ex's place we had the OWB and an EPA fireplace insert. With a constant radiant heated warm house, there was no need for cozy fire to snuggle up to. We rarely used the livingroom fireplace, but it was always there. That was mainly only used for multi-day power outages and during the holidays.

The Russian fireplaces are cozy as all heck. We had one with a firepalce in the LR and a wide bench seat at higher elevation in the Oregon Cascades, and all you had to do to warm up was sit on the radiant bench and thaw out. That was a huge psychological advantage when cutting wood in the snow and freezing, knowing that there was a warm place to thaw out. Same with the Russian fireplace we had at the 'cabin' in the Sierras. A professional stone mason had designed and built that house, and ducted a massive double sided central fireplace between the rather large living and dining rooms to heat the entire house. It was amazing. That hearth was 6 feet wide, so you could toss massive logs in there as a backdrop for pegan style banquets and parties after skiing all day.

Britches in a bunch, .. princess, dead horse flogging, yall guys have me laughing like a crazy here in my office!

No offense to any crazies out there.

What wood life be without a little excitement!

Have both Cat and non Cat - The new Lopi Cape Cod which she be available in a few weeks now has both. You can even go with the Green Start, so no matches or fire starters. I have watched this stove burn and it amazes me how clean it burns! I was at a show and they had a gas log set burning in a fireplace and you could see the smoke coming out of that, but nothing out of the Cap Cod. So a stove with the record for lowest ever EPA emissions kind of combines the whole cat/no-cat argument and says that both are good, but together is great.

Now see here is a guy that's making a statement out of line about non cats...4-6 times a year???Cmon...non cats don't need to be cleaned but once a year...I've got friends who don't clean their non cats but every 3 years!

Neumsky, I beg your pardon.

I do not believe I have ever stated that a non-cat stove will need the chimney cleaned 4-6 times per years. If you will re-read the post, I stated that our particular stove (was happy to get rid of that thing) caused us to clean that often. Even worse, one year we cleaned a lot more than that and that was the year we burned fresh cut white ash. I won't go into the particulars of why we did that but will say we did not freeze that winter but did clean the chimney a whole lot more times.

Now if you call this being out of line, perhaps you need to...... I'll leave it to you to finish the sentence.

I'm not even close to being upset princess...but the guy needs to be informed that the cleaning differential... is not that substantial. This cat/noncat discussion has been going on a long time. And in my opinion...still an intriguing discussion. We all want the best stove...especially for the money! If you sensed I'm getting upset...maybe your just too sensative. It's hard to hurt my feelings.

Perhaps you are not close to being upset but your wording leaves a whole lot to be desired. I think you owe rdust an apology. He usually goes by the name of rdust and not princess.

In short, clean up your act and your wording. Treat others with a bit more respect. If you chose to not believe someone or take what someone states out of context, that is your choice. If you want to slam others, just be aware we do not need this sort of thing on this forum.

First of all...I'm not upset. Somebody else including you...thinks I am. Somebody convinced somebody that a cat is a better stove and I don't agree and feel that this someone should get all the scoop. And if you read all my posts...you would see I already apologized. I now will not have respect for your reading abilities. Dennis...I have respect for you as an individual and your knowledge I'm sure is outstanding...I don't want enemies on here...So I'm sorry and will watch how I address things! I did not mean to slam you...but I did not think it was fair in not giving this individual the whole scoop. And did not RDUST throw the first name calling??

Thank you.
