Yes I realize that title is baited, so have fun with it, but, at some point in your reply I'd be curious to know what everyone does with their Ashes (chuckle).

I distribute my wood ashes amongst my compost piles. A little bit in the composter (Earth Machine), the rest sprinkled over the big leaf/stick/misc. garden waste piles. Coal cinders/ash had to be hauled away, I produced way more than my driveway needed to be slip-free. That's one of the main reasons I started burning wood again. I know lots of people who spread the wood ashes all over their garden through the winter, then till them in when spring comes. My best friend tosses his over the bank by his house, he's started some brush fires that way! Gets rid of the leaves on the creek bank, anyway. :smirk:

Wow! I hopped on the computer just now to ask this very same question. Weve been tossing ours into the trash after theyve cooled.

I spread wood ash all over the grass with a rotary fertiliser spreader. I will also spread them on the flower gardens. I called the agricultural extension agent once, he told me up to a inch of wood ash would not hurt anything. I have never spread ash that thick though.

Catch bears.. You know... Dig a big hole. Fill it full of wood ash. Line the hole with green peas. Then wait..... When a bear comes to take a pea, run up behind him and kick him in the ash-hole.

I agree ...... I have had hot/warm coal in my outside bucket 3-4 days after i have dumped it from the stove.Warren said:
I put my ash in a small short wide mouth 5 gallon steel bucket out the back door and 1 a week i will take the 5 gallon buck ( full or not ) to my 55 gallon drum that sits in the corner of the garden ( drum sits in the dirt / nothing around )
At the end of the wood stove season i use about 1/3 of the 55 gal drum in the garden and in the flower beds and take whats left to the woods when i cut trees and dump it in different spots.

I put my ashes in a 5 gal metal bucket, forget about them for a few days, then go out and fill the woodchuck holes between my property and the horse farm next door. Little furry B--tards!!
When I first got a stove I would put the ash in a covered can to cool and stay dry, and when I needed traction in my driveway I would spread the ash around. But my driveway is unpaved and in the spring I would find weeds and grass growing in the driveway. That's when I found out the ash is hydrogen and grass and weed seeds that land in the driveway love it. So now I spread the ash in my yard in the spring. My grass is very healthy. I now go to the town road dept for sand.

Kidding, but sometimes I wonder if it is cooled down if this would be ok. I dont want to try it though (what a mess it would make if it backed up)!!

Reminds me of the old ad campaign for water conservation. If its brown send it down, but if it's yellow its mellow. That was during the 1970's. That was pretty gross to suggest to leave your toilet full of pee! YUK!!

I don't know about septic tanks though, wouldn't the ash turn to a mud like substance and clog things up? I'm not sure how septic tanks work. Beats buying that Rid-X enzyme additive that you flush once in a while to keep the tank clean.
