haven't done any scrounging since... shoot, i dunno how long. we're on the fence about buying a house, plus this heat and my other hobbies have me bleh about gathering wood. but, our friendly neighbor at work left a message for me that the tree service she had taking down a couple trees left a pile and it's mine for the taking.

not sure what it is yet, but one is the same as what's in front of our shop. leaves look like maple, very large, though, and the bark is fairly smooth in a gray 'camo' pattern. i'll get pics assuming it's still there in the morning. it's free, i don't have to back my trailer into any weird spaces and it's load & go so no brainer here. time to stretch out the ol' back!

I think what you might have there my friend is sycamore. The cammo bark gives it away. Not great, but not bad either.
Good luck.

i believe you're right. eh, it's in there with the maple i have in the backyard as far as BTU's. hopefully, it dries fast in case i need it this winter. thanks!

I'd be very leery about claiming any wood that is cut at this time of the year being ready to burn this coming winter. Could be some nasty problems.

+1
Gonna be tough to get a years seasoning time into 3 - 4 months.
But you burn what you got.

Nice score & the price is right ;)

yes, thanks to all the helpful hints here, i know that wood is likely gonna be wet for a while. i have a little bit of other stuff sitting in the backyard that's been there since maybe Jan/Feb? maple and birch i think. just gotta get a stove to burn all this stuff..

oh my. i've done five loads in the wagon + trailer and have been going from the top to the base of what looks like an oak (with some chunks of that sycamore thrown in) and still could take 3-4 more loads. some of these rounds are big. i have to roll them to the trailer, then prop load them up and on. lucky my legs are strong! have tried splitting them on site but the maul and Fiskars both just bounce off. since i'm dropping all this stuff off in the neighbors yard, will use his splitter. he's gonna get the bug eyes when he comes home from his work trip ha ha haaa!!!

might officially be my largest self-scrounge. pics to follow...
