is this a fair price? should i be running over there now to get it? or should i wait for a different one? i am currently using a buddies splitter, so im in no rush, but it would be nice to have my own gear.
thanks
details i have on the unit for sale:

Log Splitter 20 ton 5.5 horse Honda Motor

a very nice 20 ton vertical / horizontal log splitter for sale with a 5.5 horse Honda engine . This unit is not a home made one it is store bought . Has a brand new swivel main hydraulic line on it which cost a pretty penny alone . Unit works great no problem at all. This thing can split any thing you can roll up to it thats for sure . The largest log I've split with it was three foot across . ... If you would like to see pics or try it out this week end at my house just let me know ...
They go for $1500 in the store .'of couse mine is used . That is why I will sell it for $750

age is aprox 4 years old with less than 50-60 hours on it.

update with response from email:
"No I forget what the make is . I'm putting a new crank case seal and valve cover seal and a few other odds and end tomorrow . Cost $75 through bills power ... I wanted to do it before I sold it . I have the receipts for the parts . They will be in tomorrow . To be honest I thought they would not have to order the parts and I did not think I would gave so many people interested .... The guy who offered me $700 wants it before Thursday . If you offer me more I would rather sell it Saturday ..."

his replacing parts on a 4 year old splitter worries me. is this normal? i have a lawn mower that has a honda engine and it has not needed any seals or any parts other than oil and a filter. for 6 years

Pics speak a thousand words. There is probably a reason he has not posted a picture. I think some think they can get people to visit with out posting a pic. With the cost of gas, unless it was in my town, I would never.

What brand is it? You can get a new Huskee for $899 at times. I think they just raised the price a bit, as 'tis the season.

As far as the Honda engine goes, the GX would be worth some extra coin. GC I'm not so sure about.

I think for a couple hundred more a new 22 huskee would be the way to go. I got a used 28 ton huskee for $800.

thats what it sounds like.
im probably a bit paranoid, but anytime someone emails me back trying to push their item, yet insisting that there was a ton of response, it raises red flags. couple that with spare parts he is throwing in or just adding on, means it probably leaks or has something wrong with it....
no one spends money or doe preventative maintenance on a item they are selling in a few days... unless its broken

I'm with ParrotHead . . . maybe I'm a bit jaded, but this ad and the reply raises a lot of red flags for me.

-- A 4-year-old splitter with only 50-60 hours (wondering how he figured that since most of these don't have hour meters) that has had to have a hydraulic line replaced . . . plus he is talking about replacing a crankcase seal and valve cover seal. Makes me wonder just how he was using this splitter since I'm going on Year 3 or 4 and I am admittedly not the most diligent person when it comes to maintaining equipment and the engine is still going strong.

-- I'm a bit surprised he does not or cannot find out the make of the splitter . . . but I suppose it's possible that the make may have been painted on and it's worn off or been painted over . . . or that the metalic foil sticker or tag has fallen off.

-- I think the biggest concern for me is the same voiced as ParrotHead . . . whenever someone tries to imply that a number of people are interested in the splitter and one has even offered $700, but he is willing to let it go if you show up with the same offer earlier with cash in hand . . . even if this was all true . . . I don't like to play the "get it now before it's gone" salesman game where they use a sense of urgency to get you to make a fast decision.

My own opinion . . . I would wait . . . or go with a new splitter. But this could just be me.

Thats funny, listing states no problem at all, what about the crank case and valve cover seals and other odds and ends? This machines has been used a lot. Not 50 or 60 hours. IMO you can get a brand new similar unit for a couple of hundred more, with a warantee. This guy thinks he is slick.

Walk away. First, this was not a $1500 splitter. $1200 maybe. Second, ain't no reason a 4 yr old motor with 40-60 hours should need anything but an oil change and air filter replacement. Replaced hoses at this age is another "sign". Unless those were cheap Chinese hoses (and that is a possibility) or severely abused, they should not need replaced at this point in time.

Too many things don't add up when you could throw a couple more bean pods at it an buy a new 20-22 ton Husky.

For sure the ad is not being truthful. I'd close the case and keep looking.

For one example, we have a 20 ton with a 5 hp B&S engine. No problems and no fixing yet. Split over 200 cord but have no idea how many hours that is and just know it is a lot. To be fixing this soon on a splitter.....problems.

the husky bought new makes more sense now. 3 benjamans more and i get new + warranty.
what kind of sales do they have on these in the off season?

They usually don't have "off-season" sales. If you see 'em on sale (usually about $100 off the reg price) get going. Get 'em while they're hot.
