New (used) Echo

I picked up an Echo cs-510 for $10 from a divorced lady. It needed some hardware;bar stud, dog bolt, two bar nuts, chain adjuster screw, oil cap, & fuel cap o-ring -another $32. Runs perfect, I did a muffler mod and retuned it. Dressed the bar (hot spots) and filed the chain (newer chain but had been rocked). Cuts in circles now<>I'll try again. I'll attempt to post some pics.

That part you removed from the muffler is the spark arrestor, and those things are NOTORIOUS for causing problems in OPE. They get gummed up and full of carbon, sometimes so much that the motor won't even run. Just be careful running the saw in dry conditions when you are in the woods, that spark arrestor is designed to keep chunks of hot carbon from flying out of the muffler and onto the ground, and they are required in some states/natural areas. As for the limiter caps, they are a PITA and I remove them from all of my equipment (haven't done so on the 372XP yet as I still have to do the dual port muffler). I'd say you got a good deal there, can't go wrong on a saw that size, in that condition, for under 50 bucks!
 
The arrestor screen was surprisingly very clean. I doubt the previous owner managed to get much wood cut, everything he touched turned to crap. The seria # is 03001914, 2003 model? The saw has an oiler issue. The chain seems to be getting plenty of oil (nice "fling off" stripe) but the bar and chain get too hot to touch within a minute, free wheeling at 3/4 throttle. Chain also goes from properly tensioned to loose. Bar oil ports are clean and lined up with the oiler, bar groves are clean, no binding. Oil accumulates inside the bar cover and steadily drips out after the saw is shut off. After a few minutes it stops leaking. Everything looks clean, clear and properly aligned with the bar mount-oiler area. I need to do a little more investigating when I have time. I'm interested in how the ms290/cs-510 compare.
 
I'd try a new chain and investigate for sprocket wear. Sounds like the drive links on the chain may be burred or otherwise damaged.

With 16" bars on 'em I'd reach for the Echo. Much easier on the operator I'm sure.

20" is a lot of bar for either saw, especially the Echo. With .325 it's prob not bad at all, just wouldn't be fast enough for me. :p
 
Thanks for the pics! I'd love to find a $10 saw like that and fix it up. I have a cs440 and it drips oil for a little bit after use as well. I think it is normal for that vintage of echo saws.
