10 years old. sat idle for 2 years now. gas drained from tank/carb
looking at it tomorow.

I would start with an offer around $400.00 if it is in good working order and work my way up. Looks to have a little wear on it, but take a closer look at it tomorrow when you see it in person.

really? 400?
damn i have never seen a functional splitter sell for that little.

If you notice I said to start at $400.00. If you feel comfortable at $600 you should go ahead and buy it. The thing is you have not seen it in person and do not know for sure it is functional. Hope it all works out for you. Good luck.

it was listed for 800. i offered 600 if it starts easily and runs well. and does not have any leaks.
i would be content with a splitter for 600, as i have a few riding mower engines i can use to replace the engine when this one dies...

600 doesn't sound bad for what I've seen the used ones going for.

Are you sure it's ONLY ten years old? I'm gonna have to google some, but it seems older than that.

the owner guessed around 10 years age. if you can find facts showing otherwise that may help with offering lower than 600 :)
i assume that co changed designs/styles over the eyars

Looks like 5 years of wear, just was wondering about design being older. I am no expert on hydraulic splitters, though, so someone else would be a better guide for this sort of thing!

Age means nothing. Engine, pump, cylinder, that's the important stuff.

$600 a good price IMO.
Room for any repairs down the road, which even new one will need maintenance sooner or later. Stuff wears out.
Sound built beam & frame. If it runs & no leaks, & it splits even the gnarly stuff, a good deal.
Check the Hyd oil for water, if milky colored, it'll need replaced.
Take a gnarly with you, try it out ;)

Amazing that the design has remained almost unchanged for 10 years. I am looking at buying the current version.

that is the exact model I bought 2 years ago for $435. So that makes it a 25 ton machine. See post (and or picture below):

https://www.hearth.com/talk/threads/mystery-splitter-435.52835/#post-667413

I've taken down the images I posted back then. Anyway, the thing is a champ. When I bought it, the hydraulic handle bracket (made from pot aluminum) had broken so I made my own (see pic. below). He wanted $500 for it but because of the damage he came down to $450. Then I asked him if he had change for $100 bill he said no. I showed him four $100 bills a $20, $10, and a $5. He said "whatever" and took it.

Now, I have had one problem with the top of the cylinder blowing a pin hole leak in the top weld (see pic. below). It was a very old cylinder. I ended up buying a new one for $310 from tractor supply. But all of my neighbors (4 of them) are using it and have chipped in a total of $500 for that right, so even with a new cylinder, my out of pocket expense has only been $245.

Your picture does not show what type of engine it has. Mine is a 8hp Honda.

Also, if you buy it you will want to replace the hydro filter. The one on yours was exactly like the one on mine - no name or serial number. So it took some time for me to locate a correct replacement. Tractor Supply had the replacement: FRAM P1653A. I got two of them while I was at it.

Another thread which cover my experience with this splitter are at:

https://www.hearth.com/talk/threads/pin-hole-leak-in-cylinder-now-what.65591/page-2

I gotta say that I really like this splitter and it does everything I and the neighbors need.

Another "oh, btw" is that the trailer hitch extension arm (connecting the resevoir to the hitch socket) was bent when I bought it. I didn't notice it since it still functions. But I can guess that at one time, the previouse owner must have been hauling it too fast on the highway, hit a bump which sent the splitter airborn for a while. This must have been what bent it. So, as has been mensioned by all the experts on this site already, keep your speed down when you haul that thing to your splitting site.

take 500 bucks CASH with ya, wiggle that under his nose. He'll take it, and you will have gotten that great little splitter for 100 bucks cheaper. It's worth every cent, it'll pay for itself in a year or two..........

I would do nothing until I got it started and split a couple logs. Then is decision time.

Yea, also what kind of engine does it have?

In any case those things are butt easy to work on. I even like to do it. Compared to being a computer jocky 10 hours a day, getting covered in hydraulic fluid, grease and gas is a pleasure. Reminds me of when I was a kid working on the beater cars I had. All parts are easily obtained at Tractor Supply.

Btw, the way you can verify that it is a 25 ton splitter is by verifying the make/model of the hydraulic pump. With that and cylinder dimensions (outside diameter minus 0.5 inch = inside diameter) and using the tonnage calculator at this site (previously mensioned):
http://www.baumhydraulics.com/calculators/cyl_calc.htm

My cylinder has an I.D. of 4.5 inches.

lots of good info in this thread

seller finally got back to me. they said they are having trouble starting it. so i said they should throw out a number that they would sell it for as is. hopefully they call me back and i can schedule a time to go look at it.

Get the make and model of the engine........ If it is not a Honda, I would pass. The most I would offer would be $200. This is because given that the cylinders go out, and now it looks like the engine is bad. It doesn't even have a trailer stand. And if he's not taken care of the engine, who knows what the hydraulic oil and filter look like.

that is not the type cylinder that was causing all the problems. in todays market there is more than $ 500 of parts there. Carb on eng likely just needs to be cleaned float is likely stuck from sitting. go look at it dribble a little gas in the air intake and see if it starts. ( not that many people are handy at small engines ) eng that sit for a long time almost always have a problem in the carb float area 15 min fix for me) Being that old a change of the hydro fluid would be in order anyway. . Look for leaks ,being critical of the hoses to and from the cylinder work ports and from the pump to the valve if none likely ok. Cylinder can be rebuilt for 1/2 the cost of new or less. Control valve is likely repairable also less than $100 to replace. hard to judge the pump until power applied. Simple foot stand for the hitch end is not a killer.
