Feeling the Heat
At the end of my street is a dead end - and goes into a little bit of wild growth area.
My daughters were all excited and came back from their bike ride saying there was a bunch of wood cut up and sitting there.
I went to take a look - chain saw and trailer in hand.
About a cords worth - It's on public land - but still I knocked on an older gentlemans door for at leats 5-10 min so I could ask if the wood was spoken for.
No one came to the door.
I got started cutting and after 10 min and several wheel barrel fulls the old guy is standing just 10 feet from. I know him from walking his dog all the time in front of my house.
I shutoff the chainsaw and say "whats up" - maybe that old speak for screw. But I literally was going like crazy and a bit winded...trying to hurry up as my wife was going out soon.
He replies "whats up with you".
I say I'm the guy up the street. I knocked on both yours doors and no one answered as I was going to ask if anyone had eyes on this.
He says its his sons wood.
I go...well I figured since its on public land it was up for the taking...but I still was nice enough to knock on your door - both doors in fact and no one answered.
He says his son asked the tree service to leave some pieces for him the other day.
I said I was here when the tree guys were cutting it down.
He says his son would be pretty upset if he came home and nothing was left.
I said...he probably should have put a note on it - saying spoken for - since anyone can come by and grab it.
I said if I found this wood I would not let it sit around - and I wouldn't leave until it was gone.
I tried to convey the msg to him - tell your son if he still wants it - put a note on it.
Otherwise I'll be by tomorrow and will knock on the door again.

I suppose the initial "whats up" was alittle out of place. But I have three kids - a job - and I do stuff for work when I have 'free time'. My short 'whats up' was just simply the first thing that came out...but I think I offended him.

But I can;t help but think - if you got wood that your laying claim to - don't leave it sitting.
Or don't get mad if someone comes along when no one is there.

Sadly - this is black locust and norway maple. It would be my first black locust and I was sure looking forward to it.

Would any of you have just kept cutting ?
I did take home some small 6-7" pieces - about 3 feet log.
But somehow I feel guilty - and pissed at the same time.

Sorry about that. Though, if it was already bucked into rounds, I would expect someone would be coming back for it. Maybe talk to the tree company.. they might be doing other jobs in the neighborhood.

I haven't tried locust yet either.. we just don't have any, yet I have a friend who has so much of it on her land she uses it in her burn pit sometimes.

If by "public land" it was a right of way on his property then it ain't public land. It is his in pretty much every state. And his wood to do with as he wants and his responsibility to get it out of there. But if it was not a right of way on his land then the message to the son and him is "You snooze, you lose.".

Had an old gal come through the woods shrieking when me and the neighbor were cutting up a tree years ago. Her poor old husband trailing behind and when he saw me and the neighbor, in our younger in better shape days, his life was obviously passing before his eyes. I knew where the property line pipes were and walked over to one and advised her to get the hell back behind it where she belonged and stop yelling at me. And to be my guest to call any cop she wanted to.

As they walked away the gentleman passed by me and whispered "Thank you.".

I would say "OK, no problem." There's plenty of wood around, no need to PO anyone, especially a neighbor. You'll get some Locust soon enough. :)

When you talked to the tree guys, what was said? Did you tell them you wanted it?

.

The land was/is owned by the railroad. The railroad ?donated? it to the town where - in their brilliant ways of spending money where it was most necessary - tore up the railway - and made it a 'rail trail' for walking.
It is not owned by the gentleman in anyway shape or form.

Son snoozed. Son lost.

I would never take wood unless I knew for sure it was mine, never. I go...well I figured..... is reason enough to quit cutting and leave it alone. I think you offended him long before the "whats up"

I'm not sure how it works around you but even wood on public land here is not up for the taking. If it's on public land it stays on public land unless you can somehow get permission to remove it. We have a state land area close to my house and I see dead wood going to waste all the time.

I wouldn't have even began to mess with the neighbor about it. I would've picked up my saw told him sorry for the misunderstanding and went on my way. Way too much opportunity for wood out there to cause tension that may linger with a neighbor.

You already pissed him off, so just take the wood, F him.

I try to ere on the side of caution when dealing with a scrounge. If I cant talk with someone that seems to know about the wood...I just move on.
Plenty of wood out there that wont get feathers ruffled... In the end its your call thou.

"Hey neighbor (with a big smile) , Didn't want it to go to wast.
Tell your son I'll help buck & load it for 1/2 or if he don't want it let me know, Have a nice day"

What you're thinking as you walk away is best left unspoken ;)

Next time leave the saw home, Trailer the logs out, it's quieter ;)

This a.m. around 11am the door bell rings - it's the son-in-law of the old man. He was very friendly and said whatever I wanted to take go for it. Anything I didnt take he would grab the rest. I told him my version of what happened and he said 'yeah my father-in-law will get right in someone's face'.
Anyways - I suppose careful what I wish for...this locust is not the easiest to split. My 7Ton HF unit is on the edge when cutting 8-10inch rounds. I'm sure if I was closer the 200 feet from the electrical it would have more power...but it is pretty darn difficult.

If anyone can tell me what else I have I'm looking to know what yall think.
I know some of it appears to be Norway Maple - I had the chance to see some of the leaves anyways - but what else do I have ?

I'm really pretty happy. I plan on dropping some beer and wine coolers for the guy tomorrow.
Him and his wife came out several times to chat about stove burning etc and the guy showed me his antique electric splitter - man it looked old but beefy and cycle time was quick.

quick clip of splitting one of the smaller rounds of locust

I ended up getting several trailer fulls. Not all is seen in the pics.

Glad it ended well - maybe you clue him in on your next big scrounge - easier work with a partner

Sometimes Patience is a Virtue. Congrats on making lemonade out of lemons....

Glad to hear it worked out in the end!

Locust, cherry, & soft maple, not sure what maple, but maple. Let the Cherry dry for a month or two, it'll split a little better. Nice job on stayin on good terms with the neighbor too. A C
