I have had an extremely busy spring summer. Seems like just yesterday I was finishing up bottling syrup which those of you who sugar know 24 hours in a day in not ENOUGH! Well one thing led to another and before I knew my wife and I were planning an open house and sending our daughter off to college (note to self CHANGE LOCKS ON HOUSE).

I've been meaning to log on to Hearth for sometime but just the other day my neighbor called who lost a HUGE sugar maple from the storms we had in July and wantView attachment 72702 ed me over with the stihl. I'm probably a good 7 years ahead on wood but hey I thought " what would my good friends on hearth do?" Yep, that maples mine. Still have one more truck/trailer load to bring home. :)
I do apoligize to all the great members on hearth for being out of touch for so long. I do have a couple of questions tho?
1. Does Backwoods Savage still split vertical and use a red milk crate?
2. Is zap stacking all his wood within 1/8" of being level/plumb/ and all exactly the same length?

Here's a pic of some of the sugar maple, gonna split when temps cool down.

Edit....gonna take some time to figure out how to post pics!

Good to see you back, wishlist! I was wondering where the owner of the most unique woodshed on Hearth.com has been! What did you end up with at the end of your sugaring season? I ended up with 25 gallons of syrup, it was a short-lived sugaring season for us here. Terrible spring for sugaring......

Glad you're back & stress free.
Summers are always fast & short here.
Now you're 8 years ahead on wood. A good thing! ;)

Yes!

Good to hear from you Wishlist, I'm sure that Sugar Maple will make for some nice fires.

Hey Scott, thanks for the warm welcome.

Sugaring season was short here as well. Managed to do 62 gallons but is wasn't easy. A friend of mine who is a mason was working on the shores of lake Michigan building a weather station was not around much to help. Such a warm spring got his buisness running sooner than expected.

Shed is 3/4 full of 3 year old ash and some white oak. I need shoulder season wood tho.

Oh no way weatherguy, you mean to tell me that " disease " is contagious? Maybe its just a east coast thing?

. . .

1. Nope. Backwoods Savage was riding his ATV back from the woods one day when a divine beam of light (or maybe it was a sprung branch) hit him in the head and a voice came to him (or maybe he was just hallucinating) that said, "Dennis. You have lost your way. Split your wood horizontally." Ever since then, Dennis has been an advocate of splitting wood horizontally . . . he is also now a big fan of electric space heaters.

2. Zap also has changed . . . after years of putting up those laser-level stacks of wood he said to heck with it and started tossing everything in a big pile. He also reportedly just wears sweat pants and T-shirts emblazoned with Mumford Phys. Ed. and has been trying to convince us that heating with methane generated from our own waste is the future of home heating.

:) ;)

Welcome back.

Lol....
So is it safe to assume that backwoods savage no longer seasons wood for 2 decades
and zap sold the 4 wheeler and now uses cross country ski's and a pack of mules to search and haul those downed trees on his property?

Yes and no . . . Backwoods now seasons wood for a minimum of 30 years and Zap sold the Rhino and is now using horses to haul out the downed trees which he now uses to create home-made pan flutes. ;)

Speaking of Dennis . . . where is he . . . no recent posts from him this past weekend . . . I mean I expect to "get it" for as much as I "give it." Dennis . . . are you out there and OK? (Actually knowing Dennis he is probably cutting up and splitting firewood for 2056-2057. ;)

Jake, you are beside yourself! Time to get off the Moxie.

Definitely good to see Wishlist back to posting. We've traded some messages and still get our laughs.....but Jake really outdid everyone!

As he stated, pretty much everyone had a short sugar season last spring. Warming so fast and so much this also meant we have almost no fruit at all in Michigan and many other states. Serves me right I guess. Built a cider press over the winter; now no apples...

It's good to see you posting Dennis . . . I was getting a bit worried when I didn't see any "new" posts from you.

Maybe if and when you come east to New Hampshire you might have some luck . . . I know here in Maine they're saying the funky weather in the Spring means fewer apples, but they're coming into season now and some of the orchards are just starting to open up for the Fall.

I took my what Jake said as the Gospel! Firefighters wouldn't lie!

Hey Dennis, I found 1 apple out of the 3 trees I have in the backyard. Your welcome to it. Lol.....I did see the apple trees up at Frankfort are doing OK but we had no cherries. :(

But I'm part Irish and I never let the truth get in the way of a good tale . . .

Hey Jake, there was only one day that I did not get online.

Wishlist, I found a tree back in the woods that has 4 apples on it! Wow. Last year our cherry trees died. This year it was the early spring that ruined the peaches and apples. We did get a good amount of raspberries and strawberries though.
