You go gal, sounds like you have done your homework well. I'm looking forward to seeing how this works out for you. Be sure to take some before and after pictures.

Before i put that fancy fireplace in i would just put some brick or tile or something out infront of the existing hearth and then put a stove there. Its an easy cut with a saw to cut HW back or you can just put veneer over it or tile to get ember protection.

But your home your choice. Good luck.

Believe it or not, I did give that some really serous thought a few months ago. I decided that because of the way the fireplace and hearth are framed up, it would look like the woodstove was an afterthought. it just would not go with the rest of the house, and it would be a lot of work making things work (especially the hardwood floor in front of the hearth). I'd save a couple thousand dollars, but would feel like I was settling for something that I really didn't want. This quadrafire is a beautiful stove and will be a focal point in the room.

Update time. The out of state place apparently no longer sells quadrafires. Boy am I glad I did not send them my money. And in an interesting twist, I found out the local place is not a licensed dealer or installer. But there is another local guy who came out two weeks ago and gave me a quote. I immediately liked this guy and his business ethic. So he got the job. In about three weeks, he will come and install my beautiful new quadrafire.

If the dealers there are anything like they are here, they tend to sell certain brands for a few years then change to another manufacturer. It really shouldn't be a problem so long as the dealer stands behind their work, whether they still sell the unit or not. The key is having a reputable dealer who will be there in the years to come.
