I know nothing about pellet stoves and previously I've had zero interest in them. However my mother in law is moving into the apartment of our new to us old house. I was going to put in fireplace insert in, but she is not going to be home that often to keep a wood stove going.
The apartment is about 700 sq ft. With 4 rooms that have good flow between them. Are there small pellet stoves? What kind of fuel usage would I be looking at? A bag a day? Every 2 days? The apartment was built in the 60s, half replacement windows, blown insulation, and foam over the clapboards when the vinyl was put on.

i looked for a reasonably priced small stove several years ago and came up empty handed, so I'm interested to hear the responses to this. Hopefully something new has come out since then.

there are several smaller pellet units on the market some are more expensive than others depending on looks, features and such. the thing to remember with pellet stoves is that when shopping for one looking at the "coverage" in square feet understand that unlike a woodstove which tends to run pretty much at or near the advertized footage a pellet stove can be run on a much lower setting which saves fuel and doesnt run you out of a smaller space than listed for.

there are also fireplace inserts in pellet as well though in most all cases they are more expensive to purchase as well as a bit more expensive to install in many cases. bear in mind also very few if any solid fueled heaters are legal for installation in a sleeping room so depending on what room the fireplace is located in you may or may not be able to use it for this purpose (if its in the bedroom).

Mike, I want a small pellet stove that looks like the 17-VL. PM me when you want a customer to try the free prototype. Actually, Multifuel might be nicer. Make it priced similar to the 17-VL and I'll buy one for every room in the house.

How about a Harman P 38 / P 43. Probably the 43, as it has automatic ignition. I bought mine (P38) used and in great working condition, for $500 (and that was with a generator). I saw another for $700, 2 years old.

wow!, thats really small for a pellet stove. be hard to squeeze everything into that small a hull hopper would be tiny.

Yup. and to add insult to injury I think the hopper should be a bearing slide drawer in that area beneath the stove with some sort of fancy auger system routed up the back to supply the fuel. Good luck with that.

i could probably make that work and it would be a heck of a fun project to do, but. . . would probably have to be a pretty complex delivery system. maybe force pellets up from the bottom and burn them "top down" dang it now ya got me thinking i could really make a mess outta this one :)

glad I could help ! ! !

There is a fireplace, but I think I'd put the pellet stove against a wall in the other living room. So if I throttle it down, what kind of fuel consumtion should I be looking at? Just trying to decide between the pellet and a DV propane stove.

I like the looks of that, how much do they run? i went to look online, but got distracted by some window pellet heater from US Stove at walmart.com

The window mount units are nice if you want to burn your house down. Lots of reports of problems with those things.

You're talking about the window-mount units...not the Enviro Mini that imacman pointed us to...right?
