Just outside my office window, there is construction underway. This week I had to listen, and I couldn't help watching, as they took down 4 or 5 mature black locust trees. Uprooted them, knocked them over, cut them into large sections and hauled them away. Any one of them would have been enough firewood for most of a heating season for me. What a waste.

They must have been huge to keep you warm that long in NY. The ones around here don't tend to get very big and they're brittle. Every storm seems to bring down a bunch of them.

The sad thing is there's a good chance they took them to the dump. Hopefully a business-minded guy is selling the for firewood. I know a guy in construction who does that after they clear a site.

We get some that are easily 36" in diameter!

Grows like a freaking weed.....Blue Flamed Weed:p

I would've chased them bass turdz down the road for a chance at that locust! That is by far my favorite wood for the winter overnighters and really cold snaps. Gotta love that locust. I'm guessing I have at least 8 to 9 cord in my woodstack.

If I could I'd burn it exclusively:)

I know what you mean! Near to where I live they are rehabbing a bridge . To make room for equipment they they cut down a bunch of shag bark hickory . If I'd have known they were going to just dump it , I'd have paid the driver to put it on my property .

For sure, I'd have been out there asking some questions. Hope you find where they took it.

You never know maybe there is someone on the crew that burns wood and took it to his place. We all know if any of us worked there, that'd be US!

Around here the power company cuts a fair amount of trees for line clearance, and I have left a not on everyone's door that had a hardwood tree. Had a whole season's worth one year American Elm, man that stuff stinks when it's wet.

Agreed. It never hurts to ask. And if they do send it your way, reciprocate with a case of beer.

Always ask - I've scored all types of deals by getting out of the car and starting my rap. 3 free dumptruck truckloads of fill dirt from a house being built 2 lots down, Lots of free lumber, truckload of bricks, Several free bowwood and firewood trees, $100 K-car that ran for 3 years, and an onery redhead that is still running at 41.

Took a while to close that last one.

That should be illegal, just cutting down any Hickory,Black Locust or Honey Locust then leaving it to rot or taking to a landfill. ;sick

I agree ! I'd have asked where it went , but there is no place to pull off to park , and it's a hard hat area if you do find a place to pull off. On a positive note, the guy I buy From gets a lot of the stuff he sells from these type of projects , so maybe I've save a few trees from the dump , or chipper.
