I just picked up a new Stihl MS391 with a 25 inch bar last week. Love the saw, way more power than my old 026 (which is in the shop for a rebuild). Only thing is, I hate the anti-kickback chain. It heats the bar, and is a PITA to sharpen. It also doesn't cut the way I feel the saw should. I'm going to replace it today and am looking for advise.

I cut 5-8 cords a year, all softwood (mostly Doug Fir), mostly 12-18" diameter (still love the longer bar, don't have to bend over as much!). I have the occasional 2' plus to cut now and then. I'm planning a chisel tooth, but question rather to go full complient, semi-skip or skip tooth. Any advise is much appreciated.

I cut mostly softwood (true fir/LP Pine/spruce) standing dead, and like a full comp, full chisel on my MS 290. Like you I cut mostly 12" - 18" (occasionally a 20 incher) stuff and find my saw is, "adequate."

For your purposes, you could use any of the above. I personally run skip tooth chain on 20" & longer bars. On that saw , I might be inclined to try skip chain & an 8 pin rim. That would be a very fast cutting saw in the softer woods you describe. As for the bar heating, make sure your oiler is set at maximum for the longer bar. I like lots of oil to my chains for that reason. A C

With that bar you should be dumping darn near a full tank of oil on it, per tank of fuel. If you are not, you are under oiling it, causing the heat.

I will second Lee on the chain selection for that saw/bar combo.
