I'm looking to pick up 3-4 tons of Fireside Ultra pellets, but it seems the Home Depot's around me (Portsmouth & North Hampton NH) store the pellets outside. Both places assured me that they are wrapped from the factory and protected by the elements. I've heard from a couple people to not buy pellets if they've been kept outside. Should I be looking to buy elsewhere? Thanks in advance for the advice!

Most pellets that I have seen are stored outside, one time or another. I just bought 6 tons of that same brand at HD. I stored them in my cellar. I did not have one problem with any bags. The pallets are double sealed.

Go buy them!

Thanks! Will do! I'll just visit the store and inspect them before I go ahead and buy. Also trying to have them give me some sort of shipping deal. Did you have to pay shipping for buying 6 tons?

I just picked up 2 tons of the FU from Home Depot. The pallets are stored outside but are completely wrapped in a heave plastic material. I handled all 100 bags making four trips of 25 bags each and all bags were in great shape and protected from the weather.

Yep. Those pellet plants don't have a bunch of indoor space for storage. Interestingly enough our local HD keeps them all under roof.

Just keep your receipt, and if any bags are damaged and unusable then you should be able to return the individual bags for a refund. Happened to me last year with Lowes and they took the damaged bags no problem. One of the benefits of them ringing the purchases out by the bag, not the ton. Happy burning!

I had the same concern. I just got 4 tons last week. They were stored outside and had been there a few weeks. I looked closely at the bags when came time for pick up. There were some of the bags that were torn open on top of the ton. I ask if I could NOT take those. They said no problem. I was reminded of their return policy. I personally would rather not have to deal with returning them. I hand picked all 4 tons that appeared to have NO damage to the bag that covers them. So far I have moved 2 1/2 tons and no wet bags. Whew! It is a gamble we take for the lower price.

He has some set of Pellets!!

It takes 96,000 square feet to store 12,000 tons - if they're tightly double stacked. That would take a 2.2 acre building if you could utilize 100% of the space. I would expect closer to a 4 acre building since you need to be able to move around inside.
Double stacking also requires 3,000 sheets of 4'x8' plywood if you want to do it correctly. I doubt any pellet mill would double stack pellets the way most retailers do.
