Hi,

I don't have a T clean out so I have to remove the back pipe from the exhaust to clean out all the ash build up from last season...I know I'm bad, I should have done it in the spring...

Anyway, is there anyway to remove the built up RTV so I can install new silicone RTV cleanly?

I've heard ammonia works, but what do you do?

Thanks,
btanoue

Ammonia will have no effect. Wire brush, sandpaper or other mechanical means is about the only way to remove RTV. Possibly a wipe with isopropyl / rubbing alcohol after that to remove any grease, tar or other organic matter.

Heat will allow you to work it loose (propane torch). RTV does burn if you heat it past its rating.

OK, Thanks so much.

I'm actually calling a pellet stove company nearby so see if I can get a T so I won't have to do this again.

This year I plan on burning Dry Creeks again in my Enviro Meridian FPI.

Thinking about going the furnace route since we have duct-work already.

Warm Regards,
btanoue

Can I run my pellet stove while waiting for the RTV to dry.
It said it takes 24 hrs to cure.

I've heard you can but I just wanted to ask.

I'm in the middle of my testing to make sure everything is working before it gets cold here.

Thanks,

You should give it at least 3-4 hours of curing time before adding heat, preferably overnight.

OK, imacman, I'll just wait over night. No big deal.

I'm going to get a T installed. I'm done doing this again.

An easier method to seal pipes so they can be taken apart is to use foil furnace tape......except for the stove adapter, that's all I use on my indoor pipe joints.
