In The Woods
Mother Nature finally brought down the White Birch that was in the Hemlock so I was able to get the Maple that was down.

I'm hoping it's Sugar Maple, your thoughts are welcome. I should start splitting it tomorrow.

You never stop do ya?
You definitely "get it before it rots"
Impressive very impressive.
How much do you have c/s/s?

Just a guess but I think we have 23 + cord. (not face) The weather today is great, woke up to about 45 degree temps and the temp at the moment is 68, great cutting weather.

Looks like this week we jump back up to some temps in the 80's.

Yeah its absolutely beautiful out here as well, blue skies, crisp, dry, 70* air who could ask for more.
And what am I doing but sitting in front of this computer. I gotta get outside.

See ya later:cool:

It's been down for two years if my memory is correct, looks like the ants will need another home.

The maple looks great (really good for being down 2 years) but not so for the birch.

The MTD 20 ton will make the trip up the hill tomorow, once that is done the White Birch needs to come down. Lots of clearing of some downed stuff before I can drop the birch.

TimJ, I'll have a pic tomorrow night. I think I found the old pan the previous owners father boiled down his sap with.

Lewiston, thanks. It's still a big mess up top but I'm starting to make a small difference in the way it looks.

should dry out real nice...hope the weather is as good for you as it has been for us, warmer than normal the humidity has dropped and the winds and has been steady, just perfect for drying

Zap, we're getting beautiful weather so it should come your way. Except for one hot day (88 on Wednesday) it looks pretty good this week. I hope to get some work done too if possible.

Looks like a cool night 37-39, but the rest of the week calls for the high 70's with a few days in the 80's. Made it up top tonight, split most of the big rounds so tomorrow I'll be done.

Sav I just saw we have a frost advisory for tonight.

yeah, that's a sugar maple Zap. Put it in the "heart-o-winter" stacks. Looks like it's been dead a while.
How can you tell this is sugar maple from these photos? I have lots of sugar maple, have never seen a cut face of any of mine that looked like that round, and can't see the bark well enough to say it is sugar maple..not saying it isn't, just can't identify it from these pictures and wondering what you saw that let you identify it? Thanks.

I'm not convinced it is H. Maple. That is why I havn't chimed in yet. That photo of the split made me lean a little more towards Soft maple. From the first set of photos it is really hard to be certain one way or the other, alot of moss on the bark. I'm still not ready to make a call from the photos!

Finished the Sugar Maple tonight, in behind that I found a downed Ash that I'll get before I leave this area.

That ash should be prime zap.

If I grab it tomorrow I'll split a few rounds so I can get a moisture meter reading, it's also been down for two years.

Should be real dry.

I split some ash that was live and standing only days earlier and it was 25-27%

I would take that, it will go with some wood that is stacked for next year.
