My brother in law loves the heat from my stove and is contemplating looking into putting an insert in his home. The current unit I think is a prefab, can he just pull it out, add an appropriate size insert, and liner? Mine was easy, exisiting stove, pull old one out, new one in. Just currious about this situation. Thanks for the help. Here is a pic of his current setup. IMAG0348.jpg

Veery unlikely. He might be able to put an insert in the zc fireplace though.

Prefab fireplaces require an insert that is certified to be installed into that model prefab fireplace, the prices are higher and the selection is few. You can search on here how to rip out a prefab fireplace to install a freestanding stove.

Find out more info about the prefab fireplace model if you wish to go further.

Sblat, see post topic on page 8 on this forum titled "Question About Zero Clearance Fireplace". I had posted some pictures of a Regency i1200 insert I had put in, it looks like possibly the same prefab as the one you posted.

Here is a few more choices:

My install (see avatar) is a Zero Clearance prefab fireplace.

My inseret is the 1700 Kodiak. Install was easy if you get the right insert (meaning: the correct dimensions and the flu on the insert lining up with the flu on the ZC fireplace). The 6 inch flex pipe drops straight down in the 8 inch ZC pipe, and is connected to the new insert collar.

As mentioned, you do need an insert that is rated to be installed in a prefab zero clearance fireplace. KD

Many people, including me, have put inserts in zero clearance fireplace, which that appears to be.

I really like mine.

It will depend on the make and model of the zc fireplace. If the mfg says no inserts then that option is out.
