Anyone in the DMV area have a good source for some reliably seasoned wood? I am pretty new to burning, and have maybe a little less than a cord of burnable wood on hand now, and maybe 1.5 cords of wood that will be prime next year. I have a full size pickup, so transportation is not an issue. I am looking at getting 1/2-1 cord. I have been looking at craigslist, but man, it's hard to tell with some of those ads. I figured someone on here might know a reliable source.

Thanks in advance!

John

If you are going to get wood from a firewood dealer that is somewhat seasoned it will probably be about now. By chance, for the first time in months, I happened to look at our local CL last night and there was a couple ads for genuine seasoned firewood. They even had some pictures of it C/S/S. I remain pretty pessimistic that there is a lot of seasoned firewood out there. The seasoned wood, if it exists, will probably go fast. I think I would go get a moisture meter. My first year I tried to buy some seasoned wood and had a very negative experience. That wood was seasoned after I had it for a year though.

I realize this did not answer you question. I guess i was trying to say, proceed with caution but quickly.

If you are just ordering one or two cords, there is a company called Five Star Firewood that is offering kiln dried firewood for just a bit more than "seasoned wood." I just ordered a cord from them today. You may want to give them a try.

Wow, that is very interesting, if anyone happens to visit five star's facility I would love to hear more about their operations.

Btw, how much was a cord from them?

Thanks for the tip on Fivestar. I think I actually got a quote from them last year, but I opted to skip buying the stove and never needed to follow up. I guess I should invest in a moisture meter. There is one ad on craigslist that I have seen and I am pretty sure I know where the lot is. I may contact them and see it I can swing by. The problem with craigslist is that it is pretty hard to tell who is a legit dealer and who is just some random joe blow selling wood.

You're welcome. You may want to talk to them again this year. They are trying to expand their business and are offering cords at a discount for first time buyers. They sold me a cord for $250, including delivery (to get free delivery I had to wait for them to send some wood to one of their nearby commerical customers so they could put it all on one truck, but that was no big deal as we are obviously not even burning wood yet). I believe their price last year was $300 plus delivery (which is just too expensive for me). I have not burned their wood yet but they delivered it today, as promised, and it looks to be exactly a cord (although I have not stacked it yet). It also looks good. They do have some information about thier company on their website, and you can always call them and ask questions. Good luck!

I should also have mentioned that the price they quoted me is a "pre-season" price, and is only good until Sept. 15--so you may want to call them tomorrow.

There may be a tad more dry wood available in the area this year. A large dealer down the road from me usually empties the yard by January. This past Spring I noticed the place was still half full at the end of the season because of the warmer than usual winter. The first that buy from him this year should get good stuff. He is too far south for you though.

What is the dealer's name/where is he?

I don't remember his name. Haven't talked to him in many years. I will see if my neighbor has his name and number but his in nine of ten miles south of Manassas and that is a long way to go for firewood. Maryland dealers should have wood left from last year also. I know for sure he won't deliver that far.

okay--thanks--you're right--Manassas is too far South.

Just a follow up--I have stacked all of the wood from Five Star Firewood (kiln dried). It seems to be perfect. Dry as a bone, and about a perfect cord delivered. It cracks like a baseball bat when you hit the pieces together. In fact, it is so nice, I ALMOST don't want to burn it! I recommend the company for anyone in their delivery area.
