I have an opportunity to buy a 3 year old lopi leyden for 1/2 as much as a new Harman XXV. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? If the Lopi works properly would you do it?

I have had the Lopi Leyden since 2008, I love it, but have a friend that has the XXV, the convection blower much quieter than the Lopi's(only con). I have found the Lopi to be very trouble free, no issues at all going into year 5 burning with it. I guess it comes down to economics with your choice as long as you see it test fire and assure that all is ok with it. Personally i would do it.

I also have had my Lopi Leyden since Oct 2008 and it has worked great for me. So far only my ignitor burned out, otherwise its been a great stove. Large ash pan too which is nice and the fire bricks are solid. Is this one the cast iron or enamel version?

Cast Iron one.

:) They're both cast iron.

duecedown - In 2008 the XXV was my first choice and the Leyden was 2nd - dealer sold / serviced both. The XXV was on back-order for 4 months during that time period so i went with the Leyden after the dealer recommended it. I have had a few issues here and there but all-in-all it is a great cast iron pellet stove. It's a top feed and Harman is a bottom feed. I actually like the look better than the XXV. For 1/2 the price it's a smart buy.

We have had our Leyden since December 2008 and love it. Had one problem with the auger bushing that caused it to squeal, and on my third ignitor. First was warrantied, second i put in myself. It will burn anything I have put in it except Corinth.

Same story here Richkorn, with the Harman back order, got the Lopi, no issues yet, but after reading your experience with igniters I expect mine will go anytime now.

Is it difficult to install an igniter?

It took me about 45 minutes to replace. The next time will be quicker. You need a long extension with a T-20 bit i believe, preferably magnetic. I used some string i had to tie to the old wires before i pulled them out, untied and then tied to the new ignitor wires to fish them back through. My stove is in a corner so i did a lot of this while laying over the top, half standing on my head, with a 3 year old helping.

I've had the Leyden since 2008. Great stove and only problem was the igniter. Price new is around 3200 (honey brown). I don't think you can go wrong with either stove. Both have great warranties.

I picked up a one year Leyden in brown enamel from Craigslist for $2150. Can't give any info on reliability because it is sitting in my living room. Scott is installing it next Friday.

But if it is anything like my Lopi Liberty wood-burning insert, I expect no issues.
