Is anybody paying sales tax on pellets? Local home depot is charging. Never paid tax in 5 years

Not only I do not pay sales tax, but I can deduct 10% of the cost from my income tax each year. Maybe it is only $65 or so, but hey...it is an incentive to heat with a renewable resource.

Just got off the phone with NY tax and finance. No sales tax for fuel in NY

local home depot charged me sales tax on pellets. Called NYS tax and finance and was told no sales tax on pellets used for fuel. Hope this is helpful to any one who might have been charged tax

Don't the counties and possibly other jurisdictions also have sales taxing authority in NY. While there may be no state sales tax ISTR that doesn't mean there may not be a local/county sales tax.

I called the county first and they had no idea about tax on pellets . They gave me the NYS number. Ive bought pellets from lowes and agway and didnt pay sales tax. I can only assume there is none. Home depot had no clue. Only that thats the way they rang up. They said they would look into it. Ill keep you posted

It varies by county and store. I pay 4% in Cortland County at some places and no tax at others. There was a link that showed what county pays tax or not. Maybe someone can find it..

Again, varies by county. I believe imacman posted a link a year or so that told which counties charge tax.

Update on the no sales tax in NY. Picked up my stove chow from Home Depot. They agreed with me No state sales tax (8.625 %). They said how ever that there was a 2.5 percent local tax. The girl at the regester couldnt get the register to do 2.5 % so didnt charge me any tax. Im still confused because ive bought at lowes and agway and didnt pay sales tax . Cant wait for my 22 tons of turmans delivered to my house. Easier than getting 1 ton on my truck from home depot.

I sure hope you have a tractor or fork lift.kykel. at 44k I dont think they have room for a lift unless you can run over 80k gross there.

Dirtydave. Yes I have a Bobcat with forks. 22 tons is the limit in the enclosed trailers. I am a pellet pig but I share the 22 tons with six neighbors. Of course the first five ton are mine:)

finally got the scoop on sales tax on pellets from HD.Now they say there is a $5 dollar fuel charge on a ton of pellets.

is there something you can bring homedepot in ny to show them that you dont pay sales tax. going to buy some pellets and dont want to spend an hour talking to fifteen different people to try and explain it to them i doubt they will take my word for it that you dont pay sales tax. thanks

glenc I called NY tax and finance and they told me there was no sales tax on pellet fuel. I explained that to home depot ( in riverhead ) it took a few days for them to look into it but they finally agreed. They said there is a $5 charge per ton. I was very persistant. You can tell them to call the Riverhead HD and maybe they will confirm. Dont let them charge you more than the $5 per ton rate. Let me know how you make out. Sorry I dont have any paper work on it. You could call ahead and ask them if they charge tax. Might save you a trip.

They said it was a fuel charge.
