I am trying to decide which stove to get as supplemental heating in a 2500 sq ft house.

I have seen both these stoves in person, and here they are:

Lopi Spirit DV
http://www.lopistoves.com/product.asp?dept_id=8&sku=41

Jotul Firelight
http://www.jotul.us/content/products/ProductArticle____3117.aspx

From what I have seen, the Lopi Spirit surface temperature probably gets hotter than the Jotul Firelight because it has solid plates on top (which can be used for cooking too), but for some reason I heard they are discontinuing the Lopi Spirit next year because those solid plates are no longer allowed. This is just what I heard. The Lopi Spirit is a steel stove. The Lopi Spirit has a smaller fire viewing area than the Jotul Firelight. The Jotul Firelight has a 3,500 higher BTU output (LP) than the Lopi Spirit. The Jotul Firelight is a cast iron stove.

Which of these two stoves would be a better bet?

I know there are more powerful gas stoves on the market, but I like the traditional looking stoves, not the modern looking ones.

Any information will be appreciated. Thanks.

I guess i dont understand what you mean by getting rid of the solid plates and are not allowed.
There are 100's of stoves that are solid plate tops so maybe is a Lopi thing and that model of stove?
As for your 2500 sf it looks like the bigger Jotul Firelight is going to be your key stove.
Its going to depend on what stove you like best in your home as well.
More information from the dealer on the solid plate stove issue on what exactly he is talking about.

I think he is talking about the flat plate burners they use now instead of the old style tubes. The Jotul dealer must of BSed him about that because he has an old Firelight with the tube burners still in stock. The flat plate burner is what everybody, including Jotul has gone to in the last couple of years. They call it the Jotul Burner. Real original bunch that marketing department.

It wasn't the Jotul that had the solid flat plates on top, it was the Lopi. And the Lopi dealertold me that the Spirit DV is being discontinued because those plates are no longer allowed. He told me the plates get to 900 degrees or something. Would that be a fire hazard?
