I've spent a great deal of time searching this forum for opinions on ceiling fans and their usefullnes on distributing heat from an insert. I'm still at a loss. So, before I cut a hole in our ceiling will a ceiling fan help distribute heat from the room where the insert is located? Currently, I'm using a fan that blow cool air into the room and seems to push the warm out the other end. Will a ceiling fan help this process?

Circulating air will help but without more description of the layout it's hard to say. Catherdral ceilings, split-level, open floorplan??
The insert is in a room 16'x16' with 8' ceiling. There are extra wide, approx 5', door openings at each end of the room. It's a one story ranch approximately 2,500 square feet.
Well the fan might help, but it won't create miracles. The fan will be big and on an 8' ceiling might be a bit imposing. Be sure to get a low profile fan with a ceiling mount if you get one. Or you might end up getting a free haircut 
. An alternative might be a small muffin fan in the corner of the 5' door openings.

O' Yeah , Get a ceiling fan ......... always a good start.
You have to move the air around in volume other wise you'll gat a hot heat and a cold butt just standing in the room.
One the ceiling fan is installed you can go from there to move air to other rooms if need be.
From what i have seen its best to put a ceiling fan close to where the stove is to move air to the other side of the room. Sometime putting a ceiling fan in the middle pushes the hot air back to the corner were the stove is.
Is the stove in the middle of the 16' x16' room or at one side? If in the middle them put the ceiling in the middle.

I have my Accentra Insert in a corner fireplace in a great room (18 x 22) with 21 foot ceilings and two-sided loft above. Wide open floor plan with kitchen, foyer, dining room and den opening into great room. I run two ceiling fans at high speed to distribute heat from stove. I also have two floor fans blowing warm air down two hallways to bedrooms on either side of the house. Thus far I am heating my ENTIRE house (about 3000 sq. ft.) using my Harman Accentra Insert (which is only rated at heating a 1400 sq. ft. place).
So for open floorplans - I would highly recommend a ceiling fan.
The other night one of my little guys turned off the fans and we didn't catch it until morning - loft was 4 degrees warmer than downstairs room with stove! (usually fans keep upstairs loft about 1-2 degrees cooler than downstairs by keeping that warm air pushed down and out).

So for open floorplans - I would highly recommend a ceiling fan.
