I have a defiant 1610. I just started to get ready for burning season and found a crack in the firebacks and the shoe. When I did a little more investigating I found the fountain is deteriorating. I was thinking about replacing the insides with the new 2n1 insides. Is this feasable and what parts would be required to do the changeover?
Thanks, Rick

Not sure if that is possible. Have you inquired at a VC dealer?

Not yet , but there was a thread about it on here in the spring. I was hoping to get some thoughts on it.

The theory is that it is possible. I have not heard from anyone that has done this, though. One of the members here owns an ACE Hardware store that sells VC stoves and he was experimenting with this. We have not heard from him in a few months.

I have disassembled the back of the stove and removed the refractory 'fountain'. It is made of some kind of soft material, like pressed fiberglass. If I replicated that out of castable refractory would that be able to withstand the heat? The info says it is good for up to 2200 deg F.

One or two members here have made their own refractory assembly. I am not sure how well it worked for them.

Well I contacted the dealer I purchased the stve from and they said they would work with me. I ordered a new fountain assembly, shoe, fireback and shoe gasket for around $600. They said the fountain is a new design or material. It should be in by next Saturday. They also told me that other customers have replaced them with the newer ones and haven't had them fail. I will take some pictures of the new fountain when it comes in.
