I just upgraded to an Enviro Venice 1700 insert. Does anyone have any insight on the heat shield that is required to reduce the clearance to the mantle? The manual is a little vague as to how far it must stick out.

Congratulation on the new insert and welcome. The shield should extend out enough to deflect the heat. Usually this is about 1" past a perpendicular dropped from the front edge of the mantel. Depending on the mantel style there may be alternatives. If you can post a picture of the installation and maybe a side view too, we can offer some suggestions.

Hopefully when I get home from work I can snap some pictures for you guys. But, I guess its a typical masonry fireplace with wood trim around it. What I'm really dealing with is the top facing. The manual states the clearances as 19 1/2" to top facing and 24" to mantel. With a heat shield, the 24" requirement is reduced down to 12". My mantle is high enough to satisfy the 24" requirement, but my top facing is 14" from the stove top. My reasoning is that if a heat shield can allow an 8" mantle to be 12" from the stove top, than the facing should also be ok to be 14" away. I ran this by the dealer and of course he said no problem, but I want to hear what all of you have to say. I would rather put a heat shield on than rebuild the facing.
Thanks

Sounds like a shallow shield that projects an inch or so past the facing will suffice. It will be easier to confirm with pics.

OK Pete that's a first for me. I haven't seen another mantel like that. Is is all wood? The overhang looks like it is the same depth up for at least a foot. Therefore that is the mantel. I wouldn't call this wood trim.

There's a white painted frame around the firebox opening which clearly appears to be painted wood. There's a somewhat visible horizontal shelf on top which I assume to be painted wood. Then there's that whole brownish (taupe?) assembly between firebox & shelf that I've no idea what material I'm looking at. Need more info. Looks to me as though you've got some clearance issues...don't know yet whether or not a heat shield will solve them. Rick

Yes, it's confusing me too. Looks like it had a Photoshop airbrush treatment.

I guess i took a pretty bad picture, didn't realize the shadow was so bad. I've seen a few pictures on here that were pretty much identical to what i have. I'll post up some better pictures later today.

Until then, how do you define a mantle? Around the fireplace opening is the brick that you see. The rest of the trim/ mantle is white painted wood, and then theres the red wall.
looking at the fireplace, starting at the lintel and working your way up, there is about 7" of brick, the white wood projects out into the room one inch off the face of the brick. Do you consider that the mantle? The next horizontal line you see is just a piece of half round nailed to that same white board. Further up there is crown moulding helping to support what i thought was the mantle where it meets the red wall.

Here's some better shots, what do you guys think?

That's a complete different animal. Hard to believe this is the same mantel. This is more what I had visualized. I would take the shield out 1" past where the lower cove molding piece is on the mantel. That's where it's projecting out from the trim board.

etiger2007, thanks for those pictures, I think im going to just buy that heat shield

begreen, thanks for sharing you knowledge as well. I really like that about this site, I've learned so much from everyone here. You guys (and girls) are an invaluable resource.
Thanks!

Pete
