Feeling the Heat
Do you save pellets by using a stat on your stove and does anyone have any real world numbers on this, Most of the time with my englander I only run on heat 4 and blower 4 on the moderate cold days and my house holds fine.
Thanks
(guy with no stat who is thinking about one)

i got the same stove as you, and the t-stat definately saves pellets , IMHO, but i leave mine on about heat 7 or 8 and fan on 9,,,, stove idles to keep fire going whent stat is open, and goes to my sttings when stat closes. I have a Luxpro digital programmable, not too high end, heat only that cost about $35.

There are many variables between installs, so its not really possible to correlate. What I'd do is get a stat an give it a whirl. Stats are cheap and it would probably pay for itself the first season. Even if all you used it for was the warmer periods of the season.

Couple a tips, Use the daytime solar gain to your advantage as much as possible. Wing the blinds/curtains open during the sunny days. Set the stove back only a few degrees, If you drop to low, You'll not recover the temp. 2 to 3 degree's is a good start. But this also depends on the stoves recovery. If it takes several hours to raise the temp a couple a degree. Also keep in mind the cold the weather the higher the heat loss and longer recovery time.

It took me a couple a seasons of playing to get my setup where I am happy. I set back 3 degrees during the day and use solar gain. I can have my stove go off during the day all season. My recovery time is about 2 hours. So 2 hours before we get home I have my stat set to turn the stove on. Warmer days I have similar setup for night time. Except I only drop back 2 degrees once the temp goes below 32ºF and I use my High/low setting(stove stays on, But goes to lowest possible firing rate).

My savings are at about 1/2 ton using setback stat compared to just keeping the stat at a set temp. I haven't tried low and steady 24/7 burning with this stove, But with my old quad I noticed a savings while on stat compare to low/steady 24/7 burning.

Make sure the stat you get has adjustable swing. This is a good tool to have if the stove keeps over cycling. I'll explain if you need it.
