A friend is replacing his old stove and just got an Oslo but currently has a 24' run of 8" class A pipe. Can he just drop the inside 6 feet to 6" pipe and leave the outside at 8" or does he have to change it all over to 6"?

Thanks,

Scott

I think, at 24', he should be fine with the 8" pipe. At least give it a go for the first winter to see how it performs before replacing it.

It may work fine, especially if the run is straight up.

I had my small Regency on an outside masonry chimney for years that
has a 7x10 flue and 27 feet and never had a problem so it should be fine

i ran the Oslo last year with 25' of insulated 8" liner. I just dropped a 6" inside of it for this year with hopes of better performance. It wasnt bad last year, just looking for better. I have no data as of yet, only had one small fire so far this year.
good luck

6" feeding into 8" is not a recipe for strong draft, but the 24' height will likely make up for that.

If not, is it a possibility to drop a blanket-wrapped 6" liner into that 8" class-A? Commonly done on clay tile chimneys, and suspect it's acceptable with class-A, but I'd definitely check with the manufacturer of both the chimney and liner before doing it.

No doubt I would "try before I buy.."

The worst that can happen is a slightly sluggish draft, but with a couple pieces of 6" starting it out.. my bet is it works OK.

EDIT TO ADD: HEY!! 1000 POSTS!! I OFFICIALLY DON'T HAVE A LIFE!!

I'm running my Oslo into 8" nominal square clay flue tile with about 30' of height. The ID of the tile measures about 6.75" square. I only have issues with draft when there isn't much difference in indoor and outdoor temperatures. I'd try it to see before making the change.

Thanks for all the responses, I passed them along to him and let him know about the forum, so maybe a new member to be?
