Well I got this firewood from the city waste site. I'm thinking it's either White Ash or Boxelder. It's a younger tree, nothing over 10" diameter. Bark is gray to dark brown with groves or furrows on the larger rounds. Splits very easy with an axe, couldn't find any leaves for ID, and city worker I talked to didn't know either.

It might be hickory or walnut??
 
I don't know what it is but that heart wood and bark look like every Poplar tree I have ever smacked a maul into.
 
Well, I think it's Boxelder aka Manitoba maple or Ashleaf maple. I took a walk in some woods and found some boxelder that still had some old leaves and seeds hanging on. The bark is identical. It will make a good spring/fall firewood next year. Best of all it's FREE!

I agree with BB.
walnut would be dark broown heartwood and white sap wood.
Boxelder would have red streaks inside.

Just my .02.

The heart wood is a light brownish/yellow. Some of the rounds do have some red in the center.

I would guess poplar also. If it is very light in weight when dry, that is one hint leaning toward poplar. I seem to remember walnut as being fairly dense, but that might be black walnut I am thinking of (big $$$ wood).

Yep, we got 8" here Friday morning. Some places had over 12". The weatherman really blew the forcast, they called for about 1".

Pretty sure it's boxelder. I compared it to some trees I found.
