I am planning on picking up a used quadra fire 7100 from a co worker next week and I have a couple questions. It has a couple extra blowers in it for heating another room if you rune duct work he said. I called the place that sells these and they told me I was talking about an optional heat zone and the blowers go at the end of the duct and draw the heat from the fireplace.Anyone here have a 7100 with optional blowers in the fireplace unit itself? The store that sells these acted like he didnt know what I was talking about.
Its also been on his porch unhooked for awhile and the black paint needs redone. What should I paint the fire place with?

Ymurf,
for the paint I have used Metallic Black from Stove Bright, it looks great. I did have to sand blast the fascia because the metal had some sort of contamination, and the paint would not stick no matter what I did to clean and prep it.

I have the heat zones, I have 2 of the wall registers with the fan, but i found that they were a little bit noisy for the area that i wanted to duct the zones to. So, I used the b-vent for the ducting and installed 6 inch inline duct booster fans and I installed them in the attic, it is very quiet now. One potential issue with using the inline duct fans is that you have to find units rated for high temp, I have measured air coming out of the wall randomly and I have seen the temps as high as 170 degrees. Most of the inline fans I find are only rated for 150 degrees, they work, but will stop working after a season or 2 but they are only 35 bucks and pretty easy to change out.

If you are interested in the quad heat zone fans I have 2 of them in my garage that are not doing me much good, send me a message if you are interested in that route.

I am currious about the blowers that are in the fireplace itself. He said they are used to heat other rooms with duct work ran from them..Anyone else have these in there 7100?

Ymurf, the blowers in the fireplace are just for getting the heat out of the unit in the room that the fireplace is installed. mdc is accurate on the heat zone set up. I ran one duct off of mine to the master bedroom but never did end up putting in the blower to pull heat from the unit. They are basically just inline fans in duct work that suck hot air from the fireplace into the room.

That is correct the fans in the unit itself will not move any air through the heat zones, if you are ducting upstairs the heat will rise through the zone through convection, there just will not be any forced motion, as you would see with a fan.

I talked to him today and he said when he bought all this he also bought two heat zone kits..He says he installed them on the fireplace..He said maybe he hooked them up wrong and thats why it wouldnt heat his house..Is this possible? He said they mounted right on the fireplace. He says there was a place for them..Think he just has them hooked up wrong? Maybe I should run by his house and get some pictures for you guys and you can tell me what I am buying before I dive in this project. What do you guys think?

Going to run by and get some pictures if he is home today.Want to make sure the blowers he has are heat zone kits like he said they were.Ill post this evening to get some feed back from you guys.

I got some pictures today. Here is the fireplace. I took pictures of the optional blowers he bought mounted to the top of the fireplace. He said they are heat zone kits.two of them. The guy I called at the fireplace store says the heat zone blowers go at the end of the duct and draw the heat from the fireplace..What exactly do I have here? Also throwing in 12' of chimney you can see in the picture. He said it has a piece that mounts to the top of fireplace at the flew that I guess blows air up the chimney to keep it cool?Fireplace needs a coat of paint and a new rope gasket. Also the locking handle is broke but he will order me a new one..I can buy all you see in the pictures for $700. He gave over $4500 for it..Also have a picture of the stone I can buy separately for $300 but I don't like the color and some are broke so I don't think I want them. What do you guys think of the fireplace and whats up with the optional blowers?

Go to Quadrafire.com and download the manual. The blowers do not go on top of the fireplace. They go in the wall at the rooms you want to heat. $700 is a good price for all of that. Would cost you about $5500. new now. (with pipe and duct fans.)

So he had them hooked up wrong in his house? Maybe thats why he never liked the fireplace. He said it just didnt heat like he thought it should..I dont see anyplace to download any directions how or where to mount these optional blowers?Think he called them heat zone blowers?

Did this unit set outside or in a garage for an extended period of time? I am planning to buy a 7100 this month. I have not seen the rust on used units like this one does. Just my thoughts.
